On door cars I always crossed them. I would then tie the frame so the car wouldn't bounce if I had something with coil overs. On my dragsters I went over the rear slicks, supported the chassis in 2 places, and then went over the chassis on the 4 link car. Shocks will actually get hot on a long tow if you just let the car bounce, not good on a high dollar set of shocks. I used Jeg's straps and axle straps. Whatever you buy in either, buy the heaviest rated. The cheaper axle straps are junk.
