Removing heater core today: some questions.

Today is the day! I am going to remove my heater core and after 42 years I am going to assume the gasket will need to be replaced. What's good to go back with?

Now I plan to take my core over to the radiator shop for a pressure test but if it fails, what's a good replacement source?

Finally, should I prime and paint the exterior of the core? (Cover).
