Fuel gauge sending unit

I was getting ready to hook up my new fuel gauge, so I bench tested the gauge and sending unit. it all worked great. I put it back in the gauge cluster and checked one more time on the bench and it didn't work. Checked the sending unit and it was reading 68 ohms with the float in the full position and 128 in the empty position. I have checked the gauge and it is working fine. The sender is a new 30 ohm unit from tanks inc and I had a secure ground connection so I know that was good. Has anyone had this problem?
