If all you're trying to do is get the spring out, put a jack under the lower control arm shaft, and pull the u- bolts out. Then lower jack and the spring will fall out. It will not spring out and kill you, I've done this many times...

That way you don't even need to mess with the ball joints.

kxnomore's method is exactly the way I do it...I just use a spring compressor as well. Works like a charm, and really no magic to it.
