Re: Bought a 70 Chevy Big Block today

I thought all big block trucks had the 402 starting in 1970 and were badged as 400. I also just picked up an all original 1970 big block truck a week ago and it is badged and labeled on the SPID as a 400. Were trucks labeled as 396 and 400 in 1970. I know GM still marketed it as a 396 in 70 but didn't label it as such (as far as I know) in 1970 on the actual vehicle.

The only reason I ask is because my 1970 SPID says 400 cid v-8 engine and your 1970 SPID says 396 v8.

1956cameo: so are you saying that I might have a 402? and not a 396? hopefully someone can answer your question cause I don't know. My truck does have a 400 badged on it.

Re: Bought a 70 Chevy Big Block today

Technically, from what I understand is that all 67-72 BB trucks had 396, the 402 was a 396 bored .30 over at the factory. I just thought it was wierd that your SPID said 396 cu in v-8 engine, when mine says 400 and from what I understood all 70 big blocks were labeled as 400. I know a big block guru will chime in and set everything straight.

Maybe they didn't start boring them over and calling them 400 until mid year or something causing all the early 70 trucks to have a "396" and all of the later 70 trucks to have a "400 (I.E. 402)". Either way your SPID says 396 so I am sure that is what it is. I will download pics of my SPID and post it on here if you dont mind later on this week.
