LQ9 In a 1970 Suburban
Has anyone put in a LQ9 into a 4WD Suburban? I'm going to mount it up to a 400 Turbo and was curious what type of issues to watch for. Motor Mounts? Cross Member placement. Transfer Case Linkage.

Re: LQ9 In a 1970 Suburban
The great thing about putting it in a 4x4 is that you can potentially leave the t.c. in the stock location and then mount the motor anywhere it needs to be by sliding the mount forward or back.
Edit: I dry fit sbc motor mount/diy4x4 first gen motor mounts today and they do not clear the oil pan. It looks like the 73+ mounts/crossmember clears just fine.... I was worried that there weren't enough threads about 4x4 GenIII/IV placements but it doesnt seem that big of a deal. I should be mounting my LQ9 in my Blazer in the next week or so...then I can worry about all the other stuff...

Re: LQ9 In a 1970 Suburban
Its a 6.0L GenIII LSx motor. Probably the highest output truck motor of that generation...correct me if i'm wrong. It's just like the LQ4 but with flat top pistons (not dished) so it has a bit higher compression and, therefore, rated for more hp/tq. Iron block, aluminum heads. Was found it the Heavy Duty line of GM trucks and in some Cadillacs.

Re: LQ9 In a 1970 Suburban
I have one in my burb right now. Actually it's on a stand in the garage, prepping the burb for paint, but it was in there for the previous 2 years. It's a pretty easy swap in a 4x. I ended up using my stock tranny x-member in the factory location. Truck was originally a 4 speed. The engine crossmember I made myself so I can't help ya there. Glad to help with any specific questions you have or problems you run into, just let me know.

I got my mounts from Summit. Haven't done the install as of yet, still have to send out the harness and computer. I'll be watching this thread. Money's kept me from getting more done. Your's should be a cool project!! Good Luck. Chris

Re: LQ9 In a 1970 Suburban
Here's a couple. Far from pretty, but got the job done. When it goes back in after paint, it will look much better!

Re: LQ9 In a 1970 Suburban
I dropped my suburban and LQ9 off at hillbillyhotrodz.com to have them properly mount the engine into the frame. I bought a couple of different conversion kits and nothing worked out for my talent level. I will post some pics after its complete and let you know how they did.

Re: LQ9 In a 1970 Suburban
That cross member almost looks like it is dropped enough to put a cummins in there. Very nice transplant there!
