First Paint job and body work

Not sure were to put this... please move if it is not correct.

Well I start to redo my 1993 K1500. I needed to do some corners and rear wheel arches. I never painted before.... what do you think, recomend?

the bed rails were in bad shape so I sanded them down and painted grey. I wish I had the red paint but it cost $50 a pint. So I went with the cheaper grey. I am thinking to put a black stripe down the front fenders and end it at the cab. Maybe put some roll on bed liner on the bed rail. Please be honest and let me know how you think this looks... I have mix emotions on the grey bed...

Why not spend a few more bucks and get the top rail of the bed done in the same red that you already have. If you wanted a retro look (think 69-72) paint the body beneath the lower reveal. Then, you could use a multi-color striping tape that would be complimentary to the two colors to separate them.



Ain't nothin' wrong with the grey since it's already on the truck. Heck, I drive a God-awful yellow "thing" every day and there's a buncha people who can't see it. If you're thinkin' that the grey and red is not a good-lookin' color combo, they happen to be the school colors in my hometown of Benton, AR!

I like the photochop in chevylorays post. just painting the top of the rails would give it a very clean finished look. I've always liked a two tone split like that. If you rhino the bed and the rails and dont add the red, I think the rhino should come all the way down to match the level on the cab, think black where chev pchoped red. Or just leave it like it is and be different. Any way you go it is a nice looking truck.

Regardless which way you go you truck looks clean right now!
Those rims sure spruce it up and the paint looks great in the pictures.

I thought about the Rhinoliner on the top rail and while its usage would help protect the top rail, the overall appearance would not be complimentary, in my opinion. If you want the liner, just have them spray up to the top edge on the inside of the bed, leaving the top rail and down to the body reveal line the same red as the cab.

Again, this is just my opinion and I'm thinking at some point that might want to sell it and a cleaner overall appearance would be an asset.

It's your truck and it's your money. Someone will always be around to separate you from your money.....at least in my own personal experience.

thanks everyone.. I am with you all on the red. I like the grey / red combo. I dont really have the money to spend on the $50 a pint plus what ever to mix and clean now. The red is still factory. I am expecting our first child in less than 3 weeks. I wanted to get the truck painted and fixed and thinking the grey would not look to bad. I have mix emotions sometimes I like it sometimes a think its off.

I was thinking to do the bed liner paint on and then use tractor paint new holland red which is very close to the red on it now. just roll on the paint over the liner. The paint liner would just be on the rail as I already have a plastic full bed liner in place. But I am not sure if it would look bad. Another thought is put a bigger engine in the truck and leave it as it is...

Yea I like the red stripe up on the bed rail that got photo shopped! I think its looks good with the color combo you got on there too.

did you weld in your patch panels?

Also you can go to the auto body supply store and they can mix you automotive paint that you use in a gun in spray cans for like $20 then you can do the tops red again I think it look alot better.

Yes I spot welded the patch panels on the wheels and corners. I most likely will get the red paint and clear when it get warmer.

How would the can paint look against the 2 stage oem paint and the grey that I put down. I think can paint is only 1 stage... no clear.

I repainted my mirrors using rattle cans from O'Reilly's (Duplicolor). It is the same paint code as my truck, but after spraying them, I found that it needed to be cleared to have a gloss. So, it got a clear-coat. Still need to wet sand it to have it be as nice as possible, but that will have to wait for a warm day.

So, my answer is that yes, it is (or can be) a 2-stage paint from a rattle can.

The solid colors were single stage for quite a while after the metallic colors went base/clear (like the red, white, and black). They may be bc/cc on the two tones. Those colors were single stage on S-10's until around '95 or so.

You can have ANY color mixed in single stage or buy clear in cans to go over top of it. It's the same exact paint you buy in quarts or pints or gallons just in a spray can. It's just as durable, just as shiney, you can sand and buff it, wax it anything.

The single stage will shine just as good as clear if you do it right, if not then sand and buff and it will. You don't need clear for it, but you can get clear mixed.

I'm going to do the same thing this spring summer to my 88 with spray cans because I need new cab corners and repaint the DS fender. Mines a red pearl bottom fading up to straight 88 gm black, with clear of course to lock it in.

We've painted many things, many times this way not having a booth or need a complete repaint. We painted an s-10 bedside about 4-5 coats with a can, the whole bedside top to bottom. That was more then enough and we could cut and buff it later. We done alot of the add on accessories too color matched to the trucks color.

Really good point on the can. Didnt even think about that. The single coat paint, that can be buffed to a gloss? I never seen a good paint with this. I guess maybe the people putting it down were not that great. I will try it and post in the spring. Got about 40" of snow this week so not much going on.

all we ever use is single stage if you'd like some glossy single stage pics let me know I've got plenty I can find and send or post or whatever of some single stage paints. I cut and buff all my paint jobs that I've done in single stage.

Please post pics of shiny ss paint jobs, esp apple red and black.

Might have to paint a car black in a few years and Im undecided if i should use BC/CC or SS. Most stuff that i have read opy for BC/CC but a few guys really like SS for solid colors.

solid colors I'd do single stage for sure, metallics or pearls definatly base and clear, because when you cut and buff it messes up your flake.

I don't think I have one in red, not a good quality but I know I have white and black right off as well as silver maybe...

here's my 85 ss I took to many shows and won trophies, paint limco single stage pure white...




this was painted from the pinstripe down in single stage black, and all the accessories like the visor and scoops as well, The flares and scoops were done with the spray can paint I mentioned and the pinstripe down and visor with spray gun..









here's a good comparison dads 84 the front fender(complete) and beside(complete) was done in SS and the top of the door and cab is bc/cc from the body line down it's SS.




the hood scoops and visor were spray can and the rest of the hood was bc/cc

now the black truck or the blue truck, neither were cut and buffed, but my white ss was.








only the lowest part od the driver's door was SS the rest besides the bed on the DS was bc/cc

same truck only it's painted white no SS
