Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5

I am resurrecting this old thread.
Forgive me if that's a bad thing...?

Anyway, I never thought I would drop my truck, always preferring the stock height.

However, the more I've looked at trucks and realized how nice they look MILDLY lowered the more I think I will do this.

BUT! I don't want a major drop, and I definitely do not want air bags.

Also, I want to keep a rake on my truck without having different sized wheels/tires.

What would be the simplest, least expensive, bolt-on option
to give me a slightly more sporty stance, better handling in corners, etc...

Here is my build thread with some pictures of the truck.

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5

The simplest most cost effective way to go is cut 1 full coil off of your stock springs to give you about 2" up front. In the rear, a shackle is cheap and adjustable.

Trust me when I tell you lowering your truck is addictive. I have never seen anyone raise one back up, but I can't count the times I have seen guys lower them more. If it were me I would spend the money and go with a 3/5 or 4/5 drop the first time.

Does this include changing the front spindles?

Can you link me to some "complete kits" for this application?

Yes, my choice would be to use drop spindles. It give you the most accurate drop and does not change your ride. Take a look in our Vendors Marketplace. There are some super deals there on DJM, etc.

This is my truck with 1.25 coils cut off and 1 leaf removed in the rear on 275/60r15 tires. I want it lover but I need it for hauling and towing so she will stay this way for now.

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5

That's really nice.
I like that. A little lower, sportier,
but still looks like a truck. :-)

My 78 1/2 ton will never haul or tow anything again, so I'm not worried about that.
Especially after I get it 100% restored.
It will be my daily driver, but nothing is going in that bed or on that hitch. :-)

I've got the 78 3/4 ton for that crap.

Good looking truck 68longhorn. If you want it lower have you considered an Air over Leaf (AOL) system for the rear? That allows you to go low, but increase load capacity as needed.

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5

thanks for the compliment N2TRUX. Your truck is SWEET!!!! I thought about a AOL kit, quick question tho... How does it ride? I've driven a few customers Super Dutys with them and the are hard as a rock( I'm guessing fully aired up). For now its gonna sit at that height, I eventually want to go lower when I get another truck.

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5

previous owner did it, he cut one coil out, not low enough so went 1/4 a coil more. the truck came with 4 leaves stock(3 + overload). He took one of the middle leaves out, the overload is still there.

it rides like a truck. lol It gets a lil bouncy over bumps sometimes, especially with a load.

The AoL on my 77 road great. Even with 45 series tires the ride was not harsh at all. I have had similiar set ups on several trucks and have been very pleased with the ability to ride low, yet air up to meet the demands of my load.

There's nothing wrong with lowering a truck "economically" as long as you don't heat the springs.

Cutting a full coil from the front springs works great. There are several way to cut them properly with out using excessive heat. The rear can be lowered with a shackle, or you can raise both the rear spring hangers. The lowering shackle is much easier, and can be had for cheap.

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5

Just finished dropping mine 4.5/6. Drives better than it ever has. Handles better. Has not bottomed out or scraped yet and I definitely took it for a test ride lol. The only thing you have to be cautious of is pulling up to parking spaces with curbs or those concrete stops. The lower bumper valence can scrape.
