Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5
Got an 87 r10 pickup. 5 leaf spring rear. Most I haul, would be either 2 dirt bikes in the bed, or, pulling a 5x8 trailer with bikes and gear. After lowering, I would want the truck to continue doing those duties.
I don't mind c-notching, it doesn't look too hard using a rotary air cutter, or possibly a sawzall. I also don't mind notching the bed support if I were to go with the 3/4 shackle hanger setup. I am looking for either a level stance, or a slight front rake (somewhat like factory). I also want the truck to corner pretty well, and plan on adding a front stabilizer bar as well (not equipped from factory). If I were to go 3/4, seems like most of my factory ride quality will stay the same. Shackles and hangers seem a bit more involved than a flip kit though, and if I ever wanted to go lower, I really can't with a shackle/hanger. I could with the flip. If I do the flip kit, I may have problems with my tailpipes hitting the rear axle, so I'd have to dump the exhaust if I do it. I want to make sure the front goes with it. What I mean is, DJM sells an inexpensive 3/5 kit, but will this cause the truck to have that "boat stance" which I certainly don't want? Should I add a 1'' lowering spring to make it a 4/5 or will this not be needed? As for the wheels, I will be running 15'' alloys, and I am aware of the issues I may have with the 3'' spindle, I hear grinding is minimal. I don't want big gaps between tire and fender, but I also don't want any rubbing. If I go 3/4, I am running 255/70/15 all around, like slonaker's truck, or stagger it with 225/70 front and 255/70 rear. If I go 3/5 or 4/5, I plan on running either 255/60/15 all around, or 255/60 up front and 275/60 rear, not sure yet. What would you guys recommend, staggered or not?. Also, will the 255/60/15 rub on a 4'' front drop? |

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5
I personally like a slight rake. I am doing a 74 right now and am planning on a flip for the rear I already put 3" drop spindles and am going to put 1" or 2" depending on how low the rear is after the flip. I was going for a slightly tucked tire look with a 245-60-15 front and a 275-60-15 rear. I'd go as low as you feel comfortable with since you know what the roads in your area are like. these trucks look better the lower they get IMO but if the roads suck in your area you might not want to drop it as much.

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5
I went 2.5/4 using spindles and replacement rear leaf springs . It rides nice and is a total bolt on . The front is probably a little lower since I am using the original coils which I am sure have settled a little over the years . I like the stance of my truck . Top pic is stock and bottom pic is lowered .

Well, the roads here in Connecticut, especially in my area, are pretty horrible. New England winters and plow trucks make it really bad, they are actually rated one of the worst states in the country for road conditions (not suprising). f.monroe, for a mild drop, that 2.5/4 kit really brought it down nicely. That's a perfect stance even though you are running what appear to be 17's.

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5
I would choose a 3/4 drop if you want go low with the bikes... I have a 2" rear drop in my 2001 when I go to the track with my bike it drops 1/2" so you can go with 3/4 without problems

The 2/4 drop will be perfect for what you need. If you want to go lower later on, it's not a big issue.
My truck sports a 2/4 drop via spindles, shackles, and hangers. Wheels are 15x10.

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5
wow, these shackle/hanger drops bring the truck lower than I thought they would. Acex, that is a perfect stance and it looks like you are even running a 60 series tire. I thought there would be more gap but that is perfect. Maybe I won't have to run 70 series tires. I really like the stance yours and f.monroe have. I think a flip kit may be too low for what I'm looking for, and then, I'd have to add front coil springs to even out the front, which then screws up alignment and ride quality. Atleast with the shackle/hanger kit, I won't have to alter the frame. I was planning on the DJM 3'' front spindle, but your 2.5'' spindles give it plenty of rake, plus I wouldn't have to do any grinding. I think I will have to look further into those 2.5 spindles.

Wow, yours looks awesome too classic87. Your's has a nice front rake to it. The 3/5 seems iffy. Yours looks awesome. Another member here, I think 454HO, did a 3/5 as well but his does not seem to have the slight front end rake, his seems to have a bit more gap at the front wheels.

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5
Oh crap ^^ ... that's a 5/6 drop... I had 3" spindle on my mind and I forgot to add cutting the coil which gave another 2". Sorry about that...

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have been picking up alot of good ideas for my truck. See pics I'm also trying to figure out which drop to go with. One quick question if you run bigger wheels would you need more of a drop to compensate for the larger rims to basicly keep the same height. i.e. let say your running 18's on a 2/4 drop and you move to 20's would you need to move to a 4/6 drop to stay at the same height. |

^ most of the time yes but it depends on what tire size you had before compared to the new ones. some one else should shim in with more info soon.

Tires are both 60 series. 255/60/15 up front and 275/60/15 out back. If you do the flip kit, plan on adding helper bags out back to help out when towing. Even though it's not a real heavy load, you'll want to set it up so you can tow a larger load if you have to.

well mines susposed to be a 5/6, but it looks like a 4-7 don't know how that happened, in front theres djm 3inch drop spindles and 2inch coils in back with a beltec flip kit and 3 remaining leafs out of the 6 and the wheels are cragar street stars 15x7s 4.125 in. Backspace in front with a 215/70 tire and back 15x8 4.125 in. Backspace with a 275/ 60

Re: Not sure which to choose: 3/4 3/5 or 4/5
I don't think Frank cut anything on his setup. That is the main reason he went the way he did. That way it could be unbolted, and you would never know.
