Talking Rebuilt My First Q-Jet!!!

Hey guys, today I finished up my very first carb rebuild! This has a back story to it so bear with me.

I was talking to one of the local Modified owners that is getting out of racing, and I mentioned that I was looking for a Q-Jet. He told me, "Go on out to the race shop and pick one out from what's on the shelf." Well, I went out there a few days after the conversation and sadly, there was only one left so I chose it. I thanked him again and asked him to keep an eye out for some M/T valve covers for my 350. He said sure and that he was glad he could help.

I got the carb home and started looking it over to see what I had to work with and the first thing I did was decode it. It decoded out to a 1973 Chevrolet with a Manual Trans. I'm thinking, "Ok, this will still work on mine. But, if it doesn't I could always save it for the swap meet." So I decided to take it to Auto Service with me to ask my teacher about it and to see if he thought it needed a rebuild. we both said it should work and we also figured a rebuild isn't that expensive, so we'll go for it.

I did all the steps for stripping it and cleaning it off, and it cleaned up like a new penny. My teacher ordered the kit yesterday and I started putting it back together and got it 75% done by the time the bell rang. So today I went into class to knock this one out of the ballpark.

I finished it, got the idle screws roughly adjusted so I can put it on and tune it. I will say it was a bit of a challenge with the linkages, but I pulled through and it was fun. I'm going to rebuilding another one soon (the one that's on my truck)

Sorry guys, no before pics, but here's what I ended up with today.

Thanks
Benjamin.

Nice work buddy! Just a fyi, if you have power brakes you wont be able to hook the vaccume tube to the back of the carb because. by what i can tell it was set up for a manual brakes and does not have the female part you screw the brake booster line to.

+1

Sadly, I tried and lost a spring on mine so I stuck the pieces in a box and bought a Holley.

Re: Rebuilt My First Q-Jet!!!

What school, exactly, do you go to? i wish something like that was around for me then or even now.

2) Congrats! i did my first q-jet rebuild, which was also my first carb rebuild period last jan.
i think the hardest parts were putting the power valve back in while not tearing the gasket and bending the metering rods while trying to put the "lid"/top of carb back on. And then the choke arm that is sort of "inside" the throttle body and attaches to the shaft----i tilted the carb on it's side while using a paper clip.

I'm pretty sure you can pull the plug out of the base (shown in the second pic.) and screw the adapter for the booster line in.

Congrats on the rebuild. That is my favorite vintage Qjet. For the choke it should have a thermostatic spring that mounts to a pad on the intake. By far the easiest and best working choke I have used.

I've done a few Qjets now as well as a carter and an Edelbrock and small engine carbs.

What Damien said. Some had a nipple instead of that plug to hook the hose to, some had a hard line screwed into that hole.

Hmm, learn something new. Looks like i got a reason To take mine off and see if its just a plug and has threads behind it or if its part of the casting. Thanks!
