I like the patina look myself, but it will not last in this area. Those western trucks that are sun-faded and bare would rust to the ground in this environment. The faux treatment gives better (sealed) paint coverage while retaining the worn-thin look.
That said, I can dig wide whites on 15" steel wheels as well as the 20-22 inch aluminum wheels. It just depends upon the whoole look that you are after. Diversity makes enthusiasts and draws groups like this together.
