I would one:
a) verify you have a good battery and b) then look at the spring contacts to be sure they are not rusted. c) Also verify the bulb is a good bulb. Just some ideas...

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but I don't think the GM compasses had a built-in light.
Unless mine was so old it corroded in place before I opened the box.

Anybody know what kind of oil I should inject back into the compass? Mine's lost over 50% of its fluid.

This is the jury rig I use to illuminate the compass at night. It's a tiny button-cell flashlight with a gooseneck. It also has a little laser, but my attempts at getting the laser to focus on the magnetic cursor [or lubber line] panned out.
I used friction tape to lash it to the rear view mirror stem.
