Yup that's a crate motor or at least its valve covers

Re: Interchangeable parts

Thanks, the truck was hit in the front right corner and the right hub is froze up. So I am guessing it was running ok up to that point. I really just bought it for the body parts but I was hoping I could sell any remaining parts. Thanks again

Re: Interchangeable parts

Yep, looks like a crate motor to me. They do have good heads on them, and they are not a bad motor, just not a power house.

Re: Interchangeable parts

If the motor runs you won't have a problem selling it, but Crate motors are hard to sell as a "CORE". The guy I sell my blocks to does not like to buy the crate motor blocks, only the heads. If you can find a buyer that is just looking for a replacement motor, then your golden.

Re: Interchangeable parts

I have used a sawzall a couple of times, I usually only do it if I'm junking the cab, and I don't feel like dragging out my torch. If I'm trying to save the cab I just grind the head of the bolt off. Some times all four of the bolts come out with a socket, but it is not very often.

Re: Interchangeable parts

I broke one off, one came out, one rounded and the last one felt like it was going to break so I stopped and sprayed with some more release agent.

Re: Interchangeable parts

Just got out all 8 bolts holding the box on, tried socket that did not go well, used a grinder and that worked great, removed tail light lenses and screws holding gas necks in on both tanks, can anyone think of anything else I should be concerned with. I thought I would work on the box first hoping it would give me more room to work on removing the cab.

Re: Interchangeable parts

I took the seat and carpeting out of the red truck today and this is what I found. Looks like I will be replacing both floor panels , rockers and cab corners. This will be my first attempt at this. Any suggestions.

In 83 GM moved the wiper switch to the Turnsignal stalk. Marrying an 83 or later column to the 82 cab harness would be an adventure but not impossible... given time, patience, and a full set of wiring diagrams for both years.

If you're swapping the cabs just keep the 85 cab harness and column. You can re-pin the 82 engine compartment bulkhead plugs to match the pinouts of the 85 cab socket. Most of them will probably match already.

I assume you'll be getting a current title to go with the VIN plate riveted to the 85 cab... That's the only real gotcha on a cab swap.

As he said mostly little things, but 84 was the year that the wipers changed from the dash to the turn signal stalk on the column.

Placement of the front turn signals differ also. 82 turn signals are in the bumper, 83 and newer went in various places of the grill.
