Other than the nasty fluid, the rear diff seems ok. Does it takes a gasket?

Looks like tranny needs some help. Maybe trans pulled for some reason and when it went back in, converter wasn't seated properly. As for the rear, yes it takes a gasket, although folks have used RTV also.

That would be why it doesn't want to apply reverse. It's leaking internaly

Diff is a 14 bolt. Not sure how much fluid. Good rear though.

If that is in fact a posi, you need to add gear oil plus a 4oz. Bottle of friction modifier. And do not buy the pre-mixed stuff. It is not the same. Also, as for the gasket, I use a product called "the Right Stuff". It is what most OEM's are using as well instead of paper gaskets. Much better than RTV and you can use it right away.

All these things should be available at your local parts store.

There is a plug on the right side where the driveshaft attaches, take the plug out dump in some 90wt gear oil till it starts to come out.

capt. i think i see the problem. thats alot of metal in there. if it where me i would be looing for a well built 700. a 700 is a 400 with over but they where built cheap so they dont like power same as the dodge 47re. its a 727 with over. there are a few comps out there that will build a 700 well and they are not cheap but then again no trans is

4L80e is the turbo 400 with overdrive. 700 was used to replace the lighter duty (lighter duty than the 400) turbo 350.

Ok, so I've been getting quotes on a trans swap from the TH350 to a 700R4 of about $2400

Is that right?

yea that would be the hd 350 i think gm called them 375. but then what is the 200r4 based off of? i was always told 700 was a 400 200 was a 350. or at least base off of them

Its based off the Th200 or th250.. I can't remember. Essentially the little brother to the th350. My 79 nova (250 motor) has a Th250.

The HD version of a TH350 is called a TH375B, An extra friction in the Forward & Direct drum is the only difference worth mentioning. A light duty version called a TH250 also existed.

A TH375 is a light duty version of a TH400....Fewer clutches & 27 spline output. The HD version of the TH400 is a TH475/3L80-HD.

The 4L80E is based on a TH400.

The lower-end (Center support & down) of a 700R4 is the same as a TH350, The rest of the 700R4 is a "Clean sheet design". Though the front pump is a off shoot of a 2004R.

The 2004R is loosely based on the TH200, The Low/reverse, Direct, & Forward clutch assembles are a lot alike.
