What "stock looking" air cleaner will fit edelbrock 1406

I bought a new crate engine that will be all black. My rusty chrome circular edelbrock one will look out of place.

I'd like to replace it with one that will fit over an edelbrock 1406 (I'm fine with using a spacer).

If I go junkyarding or ebaying what ones will appear stock-ish and function properly? I'll even buy new if not too $$$.

Pics are always good too

Most factory 4 barrel air cleaners will fit. Bring a tape measure or ruler and check the opening to be 5 1/8", as that's what an Edelbrock (and most 4 barrels) takes.

Re: What "stock looking" air cleaner will fit edelbrock 1406

I'm definitely going to have to find one at a pick n pull... people want $80-100+ for a used one? I think I have a Pontiac one I had been saving for my firebird somewhere in the shed... that may fit, never tried it. Never knew they were worth so much, my dad has probably tossed/scrapped over a hundred of the dang things.

You may need a banjo fitting to fit some stock air cleaners without a spacer, but most stock air cleaners will fit. If you are junkyard diving, don't forget to check out Olds, Buicks, and Ponchos - a lot of them had 4 barrels.

Re: What "stock looking" air cleaner will fit edelbrock 1406

Any GM 4 barrel air cleaner will fit, as stated above. They are a dime a dozen at most pick n pulls due to the many models that used them. No need to pay more than about $20 for one and clean it up and paint it yourself. The stock spacer is present on just about every truck I run across and also found on the parts board.

Re: What "stock looking" air cleaner will fit edelbrock 1406

So there is a spacer I should use? Is it metal or plastic?

I didn't think a used one should be more than $20-30. There has to be a billion of them around.

Jessie - I have my original stock one that I'm not using. It's in good shape and just hanging on the wall. Could use to be repainted but overall it's not bad. If you're interested, maybe we could trade - you could weld a few things on my truck and/or give me a welding lesson for it. - Matt

Re: What "stock looking" air cleaner will fit edelbrock 1406

You can weld as well as I can!

Dang it! I just made an offer on a complete set (hose, riser, air cleaner) on the parts forum.

If that falls through I'll take it. If not, I can still hopefully show you a thing or two. I'm not great at it, but I can fill holes

My cheap crate engine is starting to cost me a lot of $!

Maybe - but you also own a welder! That makes you more of a welder than me.

Let me know - I have the riser and hose somewhere, too.

I'm using the stock 67 air cleaner with a 80's/90's spacer those are like about an inch and 1/4 tall compared to the original ones which are close to 3"

me three. I think the key here may be "with a spacer." Not sure it will fit the edelbrock without the/a spacer. The 80-90's spacer is a GREAT idea, the stock one is a bit tall...

In my mind, that's free! My friends never pay me for my time and they always disappear when I need something, so in my mind, it's free. I spent 3 days putting new plywood, carpet, and built a new console on a pontoon boat, then put all the rails back on for some pizza.

Re: What "stock looking" air cleaner will fit edelbrock 1406

Stock air cleaners just look right, but open elements yield much better HP. I'm sure mileage, too. I've painted these black for a great compromise of factory-ish appearance with best performance. I run an Eldelbrock open element w/spacer on my '72 w/Edelbrock carb/intake. It's not trying to be 100% original, just close, and that's what we all did from day one. I have a Z28 dual snorkel for my '67 project because I want that era performance look (got the valve covers, too). But,I'll have an open element to slap on for when I want it to run best. Even when I run a stock air filter I usually flip the lid to get that air in there. They are just so restrictive.
