Spare tire carrier

Once it warms up (hopefully before April) Ms Notallthere and I have to go out to some of the Upulls in the Michigan area for a parts run. I am a hopeless romantic and take the wife.

Anyways I was wondering if anyone has considered or done a newer style spare tire hoist under the bed of their truck?

If you have done it do you have pictures of it and how does it work?

I haven't done it but my friend has these on both of his squarebody trucks. He uses the Ford ones as he builds Trophy off road trucks and that is what is available to him. I don't have any pictures but he seems to be really happy with them.

Re: Spare tire carrier

Thanks I will have to check out the Ford ones to see. I may pick up a couple just to see. Fortunately I should be able to do a visual check on junk truck before I take one home.

Re: Spare tire carrier

Just be sure to lube the mechanism regularly. Years ago, working at a tire shop I had to cut quite a few winch cables to get the spare out when customers forgot about it under there and the mechanism seized.

Re: Spare tire carrier

I haven't done one on my truck, but I did use the GMT400 style on my open car trailer.

Re: Spare tire carrier

That is actually a good idea for the trailers. I may have to copy that on my trailers.

It used to be up on top of the tongue in that same location, but as the car got progressively lower it didn't fit there anymore.

Re: Spare tire carrier

Did you use the extension arms to take the carrier to the bumper or just the winch itself?

Re: Spare tire carrier

Then you can put a power window motor on it and raise and lower it without the cranking.
