1971 C10 5spd swap
Hi everybody I'm new to this site and looking for help,
I have a 1971 Chevy C10 that currently has the sm465 transmission. I'm looking for a 4 speed with overdrive to swap in. I've been looking around and it seems like a NV3500 could work but, I would have to switch to a hydraulic clutch. That seems like it would be quite a lot of work so I was wondering if there is any 5spd trans. that has a mechanical clutch that would work. Any info would be greatly appreciated thanks!! |

I should also mention I'm on a limited budget and looking for a trans. that I could find in a junkyard to use.

Re: 1971 C10 5spd swap
I put an Nv3500 in my '67 and kept the mechanical clutch.
It was a while ago, so I don't have part numbers or kit references handy, but it can be done. |

T5 but they can get complicated. Lots of research needed with all the different models and shifter location options plus they can't take much abuse.

Thanks for the response. I would definitely like to keep the mechanical clutch if I knew how and what parts to use.

Re: 1971 C10 5spd swap
The Camaro T5 is better but still not a performance transmission plus the shifter is far back on it. Preferred T5 setup is a hybrid of Camaro front half and internals with some S10 parts to move the shifter forward. Or get an S10 T5 and have it stuffed with good internals, either way if you have it built you're basically at TKO price.

I think I'm leaning more toward looking for a Nv3500. Do you guys have any information as far as switching to a hydraulic clutch? Or how I could use a mechanical clutch? If I found a truck at the junkyard couldn't I take the transmission and the clutch master cylinder from the same truck and make it work in mine?

Re: 1971 C10 5spd swap
I just passed on a NV3500 myself. The mounting of the starter on my 250 requires a bell housing for such and the NV3500 becomes a non-starter (no-pun) item.

Everything you ever wanted to know about installing 5 speed overdrive transmissions.... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=438224 If you think you want an NV4500 5 speed overdrive to replace your SM465 check this thread out. Keep in mind that the NV4500 is more of a work truck transmission, It still has the granny low 1st gear but it also has overdrive.(the best of both worlds) You start out in 2nd gear and only use 1st when pulling a trailer or stumps... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=673588 LockDoc
