I'd recommend backing the timing off until you find the source of the ping. You're going to trash pistons and rod bearings, otherwise. My truck is set to the factory spec initial timing, and only pings a little if I'm pulling a hill with my 26 foot travel trailer in the heat (and gets up to about 230º). I have an HEI; maybe the MSD ignition is doing some early advance that doesn't show up?

X2 on the timing adjustment. Why spend money on something that's not broken. Drop your initial down to 8-10 and see how it does.

How's the plugs look? Running lean under load will also make it ping, especially if you have high compression. What pistons are in it? Do a compression test and post up the numbers.

Do some trouble shooting before you just throw parts at it. These old carbed engines are pretty simple. You may be a jet change away from perfection.

I found the pinging problem !!!!!!!!! Initial timing was set at 14 degrees, but at 3000 rpm it shot up to 50 degrees in a heart beat, iput in the silver heavy springs, reset timing at 12 degrees, that got rid of 95 % of that pinging ,truck runs great, I bought a new dist and having a engine builder set up the new Dist. to what he thinks it should be for this engine, also put a new coil on it.
So glad to finaly get some where with this engine.
