1968 c10 died
1968 c10. Died on my son Wednesday, got it home and the fuel bowls empty. I tought fuel pump, replace with a new acdelco from summit racing, now Sunday truck dies again. Replaced the fuel filter as well.
One thing the has me concern the fuel line coming from the tank to the fuel pump it was dry. Could it be a plugged gas pick up it has a 21 gallon gas tank from brothers(blazer) 4 years old any ideas could it just be another bad pump |

Re: 1968 c10 died
Could be plugged or since it is a suction line it could have a hole somewhere before the tank allowing it to suck air and not fuel. Or the really annoying and hard to find, flap of loose rubber inside of the hose. ( been there it took days of frustration and some luck to solve)
Test your pump by running a suction line from it to a can of gas and crank the truck to see if the float bowl fills up. With the gas we have to use nowdays it isn't out of the question for a hose to fail in four years.

Re: 1968 c10 died
Could be vaporlock. How warm was it there on the days you had the problem? We have 10% ethanol here and it will start to boil in the fuel line at 190 degrees. We had a couple of 80 degree days and my truck sat down on me. I had a clear fuel filter and I could watch it boil and turn to vapor. Just a thought.

Re: 1968 c10 died
The fuel sock on the fuel pickup line inside the tank could be plugged. Pull the tank sending unit out and check it

Re: 1968 c10 died
The temp was about 75, I dont think it was vapor lock.
I'm going to replace all the rubber lines with steel and drop and check the tank |

Re: 1968 c10 died
Update. Removed tank, tank was clean. Braided fuel hose was dry and falling apart, maybe it was collapsing and keeping fuel from getting to fuel pump

Re: 1968 c10 died
First of all, these trucks don't die, they just need some health care from time to time. The line could very well be collapsing. Do you mean the short piece at the tank outlet that allows for body to chassis flex, or did someone replace the hard line to the pump with something that doesn't belong, known to result in issues on down the road? Same for pump to carb, should be hard line all the way.

Re: 1968 c10 died
Clogged vent in the tank would cause it to run for a while, be k, then not be able to suck anymore fuel as the vacuum in the tank would overcome the suction of the pump.
Loosen or pull off the gas cap and try again.

Re: 1968 c10 died
Definitely was to get rid of that cobble job fuel line. It needs to be metal to be right and safer.

Re: 1968 c10 died
Someone correct me if I am wrong but it may be possible to install the pump with the lever on the top of the cam if the lobe is in just the right position. I've seen this on a non Chevy engine before. Or simply just another quality part from a distant shore.

Re: 1968 c10 died
You can do that on Ponchos and Fords, but the lever is too short on the Chevy pump.

Re: 1968 c10 died
Its been awhile since highschool auto shop, too long to remember what car it happened to. I think it might have been a friends Ranchero. I do remember the lesson about it and how the oil pan had to come off the get the missing end of the lever. I must have learned the lesson well enough. I've done at least half dozen Poncho pumps over the years and never had to pull the pan. (Yet!!!)
Thanks for the information.

Re: 1968 c10 died
When replacing the pump there is a bolt on the block that will hold the internal shaft in place during the installation
Last time I replaced mine there were some pumps that were really cheap that stated that they were for the non-ethanol fuel

Re: 1968 c10 died
That doesn't look like a Delco pump. Inferior parts is my guess.

Didn't see that earlier. I'd say it's defective. I've never seen anything like that, in many years of wrenching.

Re: 1968 c10 died
Delco isn't what it used to be. The last AC/Delco part I bought from a dealer had "made in China" stamped on it.

I bought the pump from summit racing. Now I'm buying another from napa auto parts. Summit racing refunded my money no question asked. They are great and will keep getting my business

Re: 1968 c10 died
A number of years ago I had a 66 corvette with a 327. When I got it, it worked OK, unless you got on it. Then about haflway thru third gear it would just die. Pull over to the side, crank for a few seconds on it was OK again. Turned out that the pivot lever for the fuel pump had fallen out. The lever then moved out of position, but only a little bit as it ran into the inside wall of the pump body. This resulted in it getting about a third of the intended stroke on the lever. So long as there wasn't much demand, it could keep up, but when you started burning some fuel it couldn't.
