5 X 4 Shifting

Pretty good example of some 5 X 4 Shifting. This one is in a '65 Mack. Although in my opinion the shifts would go smoother if he used the clutch, but no one likes using the clutch anymore, lol.

If this is a typical 5 X 4, the last shift from 4th to 5th on the Main will be Overdrive. Also, even though it is a 5 X 4 (20 Speeds), notice that he only uses 13 of them. This is the normal pattern for road driving.

Pretty good example. I can sync shift if I had to but use the clutch when I have one.

I had a clutch rod drop out on me once in one of our 2-Ton trucks. Once I realized I couldn't fix it then and there, I called the office to tell them about it. Told them that we'll need a wrecker, unless you would like me to drive it back with no clutch. They said, if you can do it, go ahead.

I finished unloading the truck where it was at and took off. Timing the lights, etc was the hardest part.

But normal driving I'm with you Tim, if I have a clutch, I'm using it.

This is pretty cool, my generation and anyone after will know nothing about this. So to prove my ignorance I'll ask, is it 2 transmissions back to back?

I've never really worked on any, but yes they are "back to back". You can actually add an Auxiliary Trans to a truck. The most popular add on's were Brownies.

A much better video is "twin stick pappy." That guy can move through the gears. Most of the time he floats them but he does clutch 4-5 on the front box. Personally I float them myself.

Brownies were common in the early days or on light applications. Spicer took over a long time ago and is still making them for rigs. My 51 Mack has a factory spicer aux box. I am pretty sure that the truck shown above is actually a Mack transmission that is married together from the factory called a quadraplex. Some where 13spds and others were 18spds depending on the setup.

A long time ago I drove a 1971 C60 tandem axle dump truck that had a tall deck 427 with a 5 x 4 in it, Sure wish I could find that exact set up now, even a 366 with a 5x4

I've known guys to run brownies on old light trucks. One in mind I met in Cave Junction, OR area. He, and my friend from MD were big on anything Chrysler flathead. He set up a single Budd 1t '46 Dodge Pickup with bigger Chrysler flatty and back to back 4spds. His wife was from upstate NY. He built a camper on the back and every year he'd load up the family to go visit her folks. t was his mountain crawlin' interstate rollin' big boy pickup

My Dodge 5500 is 6x4. I added the Spicer 7041 to it about 9 years ago. Not much point in splitting the low gears when loaded heavy. I normally just put in in under and ran the main box up into 4th and then started the splits from there. The Cummins has been putting over 1000 ftlbs through that setup and 4.44 gears and never a wimper. I sure got a lot of strange looks when I was hauling the Mack back to TN running down I81 at 75 MPH. Yes it was a legal load at max weight. Only thing I don"t like about the setup is that its a 4x4 and the Brownie is behind the tcase. Don"t forget to put her in direct when in 4 wheel. You will get real stuck. Don"t ask....

Yeah, those are pretty wild.

Never got to experience one though.

I don't mind that my tandem had a 10-Speed RR.
