Strange looking dash light ?
While removing an old stereo from my 1986 C20 Suburban, I found a strange looking dash light hanging by it's wire...it has a socket similar to the dash cluster lights...as if it would screw into the cluster...but the wire does not appear to be long enough...and the wire connects to the socket in a very strange way. I am attempting to attach a photo...if anyone can tell me where this connects, I will be eternally grateful !

Re: Strange looking dash light ?
That is an instrument cluster bulb, and that black "wire" is a fibre optic that goes to the ashtray to provide illumination to it.

Re: Strange looking dash light ?
It's a fiber optic cable that clips into the cigarette lighter. It's fed by a dash light.

Re: Strange looking dash light ?
Many thanks guys !! I had a feeling it was something specialized as it did not look like the other cluster bulb sockets. I had removed the dash cluster last year because water leaked into the dash (cancer around windshield) and killed some of the gauges (volts, oil press, temp). I replaced the gauges (ebay) and must have missed that cluster light. Happy New Year !

If memory serves, it goes in the upper right corner where your fuel or tach gauge is. They're kind of tricky because they have a tendency to pop out of the socket when you're maneuvering the cluster back into place.

Re: Strange looking dash light ?
I may be wrong, but doesn't that light clip into the HVAC controls?? Or maybe the fiber optic end goes into the HVAC control... Either way, I am pretty sure it is one or the other.

Re: Strange looking dash light ?
The light bulb end goes into the gauge cluster (where Prong said) as it needs the printed circuit board to give it a power and ground. The HVAC head unit in my truck does not supply power and ground to the light bulb. That socket is wired directly from the power/ground source via wiring harness. The fibre optic side goes in the ashtray bracket, not that it puts out a lot of light.
