Re: So when in 1972 did GM start installing single wall tops?

My info may be incorrect, I just looked through your posts and #41 appears to have the long leg on the top strip and the CST panel strip.

#57 also shows a long lip. Mine is a flint 05 1972 CST with a grill in the dash and has a cwt with a short lip. It's history doesn't indicate any change. Maybe they came each way?

Good eye - any idea if this style will indeed clear the panel trim? Maybe this style reflects an early design as the example in #41 is an earlier 1x wall example?

Huh, just read your post. Another good catch. This one too is an earlier 1x wall. I wonder if these rub against the bedsides if the seals wear out?

Re: So when in 1972 did GM start installing single wall tops?

Here's a St Louis example that based upon sequence number was probably assembled toward the tail end of the model year. It's clean but given it now has a tilt, tach, FM radio not originally equipped with it's hard to say that the single wall top reflects its original top but including here for future reference.

The red/dark saddle is a neat combo. More pics here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-Chevro...4AAOSwNelebuU8

Pete
Here is a 72 CST I just cut up. Not sure where it fall in the numbers but it had a single wall
And it only had holes in the bed rails for single wall. No dual holes for Double

Re: So when in 1972 did GM start installing single wall tops?

Thanks a ton for posting. That’s great to know. Was under the impression that all bedsides had provisions for both tops but seems that’s not the case. Fun to flesh out these details.

Early (09/71) Flint Jimmy with a double wall. Seems like a complete truck probably with its original top. VIN TKE182F513973

Re: So when in 1972 did GM start installing single wall tops?

Here’s a Sept 7, 1971 Flint assembled Blazer. Did not receive an optional top but the dash lacks a speaker grille and the assembly sequence number of 7417 falls in range of other such examples that also used a 2x wall top.

Did you notice the long seat belt on the passenger side, do you think that is because of no back seat or has it been replaced?

I did see that. Was thinking it’s a replacement piece but that’s just a guess. Pre-refurbish photos would be great to see. Have you seen any others with the flanges on the front axle rather than manual locking hubs?

No, I haven't, I was curious about that also.

Re: So when in 1972 did GM start installing single wall tops?

I posted in UtahBoy's Bringatrailer Ad that I thought I remembered seeing the overhead dome lights being listed as part of the Cheyenne/Highlander Package for 1972 Blazers, which would have lent evidence that the single-wall top (with dome lights and the fancy chrome rails) may have been correlated to the Cheyenne/Highlander option package on the SPID...

But now I am doubting my own memory- I think what I was actually remembering was the overhead cargo light, which was listed with the Cheyenne package on Pickup trucks for 72.

It appears from this thread that there were Blazers built for 72, which came out of St Louis, and included the Cheyenne trim package, but also had the double wall top, without overhead lights.

Re: So when in 1972 did GM start installing single wall tops?

“Courtesy lamps” were standard on 72 model year K5s when a top was ordered and included in the RPO z78/z79. As such, the lamps aren’t called out on the SPID. Double wall equipped examples (St Louis assembled and early Flint 72s) used the courtesy lamps under the dash. Only single wall tops had the lamps in the top.

I believe Cheyenne equipped pickups had courtesy lamps as part of the package (with the cargo lamp) but I’d have to double check that.

Re: So when in 1972 did GM start installing single wall tops?

Here's a very well optioned, early Flint assembled 1972 2wd survivor with a 2x wall top and the speaker for the am/fm bolted on below the dash. Build sequence is 106728 indicating late August or early September build.

Presently on FB for sale in MN
