Re: 1971 K10 Stepside - Getting a Roller Roadworthy

Nice job knocking out those outer rockers. The dash replacement/repair looks difficult just based on doing it inside the cab and having the windshield in place.

Good progress.

It's definitely going to be awkward dealing with that welding blanket.

Patched the rust in the dash this evening. I have lots of grinding to do now.

Also applied some sealant to the upper corners of the windshield gasket.

Thumbs up Re: 1971 K10 Stepside - Getting a Roller Roadworthy

Good save! Fortunately a lot of that will be totally concealed once reassembled.

Yep! I won't have to put much effort into cleaning up the concealed welds other than grinding them flat.

Smoothed out the welds on the dash. Also filled several random holes that had been drilled in the floor and kickpanels. Also installed the driver side door seal.

Re: 1971 K10 Stepside - Getting a Roller Roadworthy

It was raining this morning, and then it stopped. I took that opportunity to work on replacing the rear window. About the time I got the old window out, it started raining pretty good. I was committed at that point. Got soaked, but the window is in. So long to the "WILD" decals.

Don't like sliders?
Nice install.

Never ran with one. I do have a Sliding Back Window in a shed that a union brother gave me. The lock is busted off, though.
Seemed like a good idea when I had a big German Shepherd that was truck bed savvy. He could have been trained to hop inside at a couple of knocks on the back window.
But no dog now. Won't fit a Suburban or a Blazer, and I like the leakproof stock [for 56 years] back window I have.

I suppose it could be nice for getting some air flow going on a hot day. When I was a kid, I rode in the back of a truck once that had a camper shell on it that had a slider, and the cab had a slider, so we could communicate with the people up front.

I'm with you on the leaky sliders. Pretty sure the one on my truck caused all the rust I replaced on the bottom rail of the rear window. I'll be doing a single piece of glass like yourself.

Where did you get the glass and seal from?

The glass is a used original I got locally. It's Soft-Ray tinted. My plan is to replace the door windows with Soft-Ray as well. All I have found at this point is one of the large door windows, so I'm still on the hunt for the other windows.

The rear window seal is Precision brand from gmcpauls.com

Sweet. I may end up getting them from Bill of he is ok with disassembling some doors he has. If that doesn't work out, then I'll plan a trip to see you.

Re: 1971 K10 Stepside - Getting a Roller Roadworthy

Working on my truck outside is inconvenient this time of year, so I'm going to focus on tasks that will allow me to roll it into the garage. It is parked on a slope right now, and I'm afraid to try moving it without brakes. I'm going to get the brakes working so I can have my daughter sit in the truck and steer while I push it around.

This evening I removed the hard brake lines and fuel lines from the frame. I will be replacing them with new stainless lines.

That should make it easier. I bent all mine, and stainless is unforgiving. If you make a mistake on your last bend or forget to put the flare nut on before flaring it's back to square one!!! Ask me how I know..... 😂...
