1971 K10 Stepside - Getting a Roller Roadworthy

Smoothed the welds on the PS Rocker panel and applied seam sealer around the edges.

The cab corner was bent up and dangling loose, so I reshaped it and tacked it to the floor in back.

I will be installing these stock mirrors. Thankfully, the stock holes are still there.

I really like my West Coast Jr mirrors. Any argument about streamlining is irrelevant, as it's a windtunnel brick anyway. The very stable and large images of what's coming up on your six is invaluable. At the speed I run on the interstate, who's approaching from the rear is pertinent.

I guess all the plants built Stepsides. St Louis was the only plant building K/5s -- Blazers and Jimmys -- until MY 1972, when the Flint Plant also contributed.

I agree that bigger mirrors are better. The little mirrors I'm going with are borderline worthless.

The truck doesn't build itself. A little work here and there adds up more than no work at all.

Glad you got lucky with only having to do the outer rocker on that side.

Agreed. We will see what the other side looks like. The floor has less rust on the driver side for some reason, so hopefully that means less rust in the rocker, too.

Reinstalled the door. There's some rain in the forecast, so I'm glad to have the cab closed back up.

Installed a push-on door seal.

Removed the driver side rocker panel. The inner rocker looks pretty good on this side.

Also removed the gauge cluster and took it apart. Most of it went in the trash.

Reinstalled the passenger side fender.

I had more epoxy paint left over from making another batch of dummy filler necks, so I painted a few parts.

Finally got the other front hub installed. All of the parts went together nicely. Hardly any of the components on this side were original to the truck.

I also spent some time prepping a dash patch panel for installation. This was something I could work on inside since it was raining for most of the day.

The rain stopped mid-afternoon, so I went out and removed the heater box and electrical harness from under the dash. I also removed the crusty old dash pad and uncovered a bunch of rust holes in the dash. I'm on the fence about patching the rust or getting a complete replacement dash. I will probably just patch the rust since it will be hidden under the dash pad. Every time I take something apart on this truck I find something new and exciting! Fortunately, I'm running out of things to take apart.

Look for one locally, I know you have good welding skills but a whole replacement would be so much easier .

A local friend has an A/C dash in a cab. He will be checking the condition today. I do plan on putting a Vintage Air kit in this truck eventually.

That sounds like a better option if it's in good shape and you can utilize the a/c holes in the dash !
