Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Glad you got it on the road. Is this your first 292 engine? How do you like the 292?
Like the wheels too. Les |

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Thanks, this is my first 292. I've had a 250 before in a 70 Burb 4x4. I liked that little engine very dependable. So the 292 is suppose to be a better engine..it's not officially on the road I live on a dead end Rd. I'm just trying to get a feel of the truck before I go down the Rd..I AM going to have to go through the carb..

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Hello it's me again LOL??? I think I got my carbatater straightened out and was checking out my timing and took off the distributor cap and noticed that my points were burned up or got hot at one time, that might explain why it was kinda popping back through the carb some times, I knew it couldn't be the cam I just replaced it, could have been the points and timing off alittle. I also got the oil changed.. sorry no pixs..

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
well I bought a new carb and installed it, atleast it doesn't hesitate now but still kinda idles rough and at times sounds like it not getting enough gas there's gas in the see thru filter so I know it's pumping it to the carb I replaced my points that seemed to help some but after a while I noticed that they looked burned after a while..I do have a wire missing that went to the coil so I plugged one into the fuse block power only when the key is on.don't know if that's too hot. anyway I ordered an HEI distributor and wires for it today, so that ought to take care of that and wake it up some.. still have to check for vacuum leak that could cause it to idle rough...Had to help my son work on his new project so didn't get to tinker with mine much... Oh and I ordered some chrome 55-56 caps for the wheels, gonna have to take 2 to work and have someone mill out the centers for the 4x4 hub to stick through..
http://www.brotherstrucks.com/prodin...number=HCC5C56 I would have just rather had some regular steel ones painted but when I ran across them on ebay they were expensive. this truck is really costing me but it's going to be worth it in the end...sumthin bout a truck..

Yea I found some that were 59-60 models I really liked but they were over 300. They

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Like the caps, so simple yet add quite a bit to the truck.
I am from Northern Sask which is most of the way up the province and Montreal would prob be around 1,000 miles easy or a bit more from our area..

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Well got out there this evening after work and decided to drop in the HEI Distributor, I made sure to pay attention to where the old one was pointing, I made sure the oil pump was inline with the distributor after several attempts I would not seat all the way down. By then I was ready to start ^%#$#^(*& I checked it with the old distributor to see if they matched up and they did, so I kept working with it and it still wouldn't go so I took off the O ring and guess what it dropped right in ^%&^$&^(* stupid O ring..Then I couldn't find the wires I bought a few days before.. Going to make me up a 10AWG wire tomorrow at work to run to the distributor.. well it's dark here now so no more playing with the truck.. I did buy me a 64 Model truck I have to get me some model paint to detail everything it's going to be the same green as my truck, I'm going to look for a 70's model 4x4 truck and use that frame to make mine 4x4..Since winter's coming and I'll be spending more time inside that will keep me busy..

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Thanks Jason and everyone else, Well I got the Distributor changed out this evening and got her running again but couldn't really tell a difference it's still not running right. It has a rough idle engine kinda shaking not real smooth, I still need to check for vacuum leak, I was thinking maybe a valve is too tight...Any thoughts or Ideas Gentlemen...I did notice that the clear fuel filter was not full sometimes, gas was at a trickle...Guess I may get a new fuel pump since there not that expensive..I'm trying to remember is it carb cleaner you spray around the intake and carb to see if it idles up to see where it's leaking...

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Make sure you have good fuel supply, having the clear filter not completely full doesn't sound good. if you rev the engine higher will the filter fill up? Maybe its just not pump a lot at idle.
Check base timing. What is it? Set idle rpm and then check base timing again. One affects the other. Make sure you have disconnected the vacuum advance when checking it. In fact the vacuum advance should be running from a ported vacuum source that provides no vacuum and idle, but full vacuum just off idle. Make sure you have the idle screw(s) adjusted properly. Use a vacuum gauge connected to manifold vacuum and adjust to strongest vacuum signal. Make sure the choke is working correctly. A cold/cool engine won't idle correctly unchoked. As you said, make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks. Is the carb brand new, or rebuilt? Sometimes those rebuilds aren't the best. But hopefully not the case here.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
I would adj the valves first. fuel filter will not be full. eng history? I know you have been through this before. it never ends lol!

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
After idling awhile the filter will not be full....that's because the float has shut off the need for more fuel...then you rev the engine up and fuel comes crashing through the filter cause the float opened again and released the pressure. That was common on my engine anyhow. I'd adjust the valves...adjust them to .004 for a start and see how she runs...then to 0 lash with a 1/4 turn of preload. If that don't do it...see what the gap is on the plugs. To much gap will cause rough idle because there's not enough spark advance. With an HEI I set mine at 10 initial, but every engine is different.

Re: Randy & Jakes 64 4x4 SLOW build
Jason the carb is new and it doesn't have an idle mixture screw must be a preset one..
I usually just adjust my timing by ear..I don't have the hesitation like I did with the old carb. Back when I replaced the cam I may have the valves too tight.. I'll rule out the vacuum leak first then I'll go to the valves... 61K10 your right it never ends LOL??? T.J. I'll check the plugs if I don't have any vacuum leaks then on to the valves...
