Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air

Okay. This last week I finished the inside of my doors and was able to lay some paint down. I also shot my newly purchased tilt column after tearing it all the way down. (It was a van tilt, so I made all the neccessary modifications). I then cleaned all of the internals, took the bearings apart and cleaned each ball, bought a new tilt sphere, and tore down the blinker assembly to get the 30+ yr of crud out of it. I cleaned off all the contacts, hit it with a scotch pad and sprayed lithium grease on them. I then re-packed all of the bearings and lubed everything down real well with Mobile One Synthetic Grease. Putting it all back together was quite the chore, but she is one tight tilt! There is no play in it at all.

Here are a few pics of what I accomplished.

The Doors:

The Tilt Just After Paint:

The Tilt Assembled, Minus The New Billet Levers That I Should Have Next Week:

Same Picture As Above Except I Have My Evil Guard MinPins Watching Over It :

Next step is to get some Dynamat to do the while interior with before starting toe wiring, stay tuned for more

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air

My buddy and I test fitted the tilt today, shortened it about 3 inches while we were at it...Disregard the instrument panel, it was used as a guide to see where we were with shortening it.

Also laid out the B-Quiet sound deadener (a rival of Dynamat). Put it way up under the dash just below the front window, down to the back panel where the fuel tank once was. I will need to get a little more so I can complete the rear panel. It was not too bad until it got real hot during the early afternoon...The stuff gets so soft, like mega sticky peanut butter and hard to handle (it was in the upper 90's). I'll post some pics of the installation as soon as I can clean up a little so you can see it.

Mike

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air

Well, sorry it has taken so long to update pictures. I had lower back surgery 5 months ago today, so things have been put on hold. I decided today that I could not live with myself if I did not shave the firewall and cap the wire gutter. I still have some fill in welding to do but it is nearly done.

Go figure since the firewall was already painted that I'd change my mind

Also, I would NOT recommend doing this with sound deadener already installed, nearly busted into flames more than once.

Mike

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air

Rokcrln and the one he did. I wanted to do an angled cap like he did but unfortunately I don't have any metal shears to make precise cuts with. I used my 4 1/2" angle grinder to make a "fairly" straight cut, good enough to do a 90 degree cap & fill. I need to get more metal working tools. I have the ability just don't have the proper tools. I can improvise a lot but it always takes much longer to do without the right tools. I had my shop broken into 10 years ago and had tons of tools stolen, never replaced them all...except for my MIG welder.

I was initially going to run the factory air, but it looks too much like a big samsonite suitcase under the hood. I will go with either a Vintage Air or Old Air, I am leaning towards Old Air.

I have not really done a whole lot to the truck since I bought a 72 Nova for my Son's first car, been doing tons of stuff to it...well, I did before the back surgery anyways. I have done a few things to the Nova in the last couple weeks since I am able to do more now.

The fill came out very nice Mike. You and Rokcrln are going to drive me to tearing mine apart to finish it up like that also. Just about the time I think I am done welding on it,.....

Big NUTZ tearing back in to that thing. Oh well, at least when it was all done you wouldn't wonder everyday for the rest of your life, I should have shaved the firewall when I had it apart.

My EXACT thoughts. If I had not done it I would have never truly been happy with it. If I can just come up with a Z06 engine I'd be happy as a clam....now where did I put those Lottery tickets

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air

NOOOOOOooooooooo!!!!!

I just lost my DeWalt 4 1/2" angle grinder to the big tool shed in the sky. Grinding away then it sounded like the lock engaged itself, BAM,CRASH!!! I opened it up and it had sheared the drive gear...CRAP! I am lost with out my little DeWalt . Oh well, time for a new one after 13 long hard years of abuse it was bound to happen. Now work comes to a halt till I get a new one, probably get one next week.

Had to vent...

Mike

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air

I have to say I really like that color too, that would look great on a street rod also.

Where did you get that patch panel for the corner of the door? Here in Illinois thats a common rust area. I have couple of doors like that on a project I'm starting right now.

By the way, your dog is really freaking me out ! Reminds me of the movie 'Pet Cemetery' or was it Cujo?

3 Stage. 1st coat is 2 coats of HoK White Sealer (you can use white base as well), 2nd is 3 coats of HoK Pearl Tangelo, 3rd is 4 coats of PPG clear

No secret, years of practice, and I am only okay at it

I got the panel from Classic Industries in Huntington Beach.

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

Wow, I'm in love with this build. The smoothing on the welds and core support look great.

Glad to see I'm not the only one planning on doing a drop cloth garage paint booth.
