Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

I know man, shoot I walked by the 1/2" exhaust while it was running & it damn near blew me over !!!

I may have to do some different exhaust, but the main part of the engine stays the same... For the $$$ reason

I was also looking at it from the front & it almost looks like it has positive camber in the front !!!
And if thats the case, I'll be cutting a coil off it in the front & heating the rear

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Dude, VWs are the bomb

But I like my trucks too

IMO, if you wanna build power with something, do it with a chevy
I know it can be done with a VW, but its just not cost efective

So I have my VW for cruise'n around & go'n slow get'n mileage & stuff
And I have my Chevy's for raw power

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Well I didnt do much to it today, I went to a buddy's place yesterday & got the seat out of a 88 dodge pickup & threw it in my truck

It fits pretty good & is the same width as the stock one, I'll get pics tomorrow when I get it bolted down
Oh, & its really comfy too

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

What Matt paid for it is a secret, but would make you very sick.
Started on my brakes. Thought I'd get them replaced in an easy day. But with helping Matt on his project (Tinker), all I got done was the left front.

All the front suspension is tight, but need to replace the rubber boots on the ball joints and tie rod ends.

Lots of old asphalt every where, evidently the PO drove down some road repair (for a long distance) many years ago.
Wish I had taken a picture of it.
Replaced the shock while I was up in there, it was very worn out (original).
Lets see if I can get something done today.

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Matt is a little tooooooo busy with his own projects. He does help me on things requiring 2 people. And he very kindly keeps my bay of the shop occupied so I can work out in the fresh air.

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Well I got the brakes done and went for a test drive. I have ordered the windshield and the gasket, should be here next week.

Thought you might like seeing the advanced technology used by the PO. He was very neat and even saved the extra wire so he would have it if something else broke.
Most of the truck is very original, just a few little things like this.
Thought I had a pic of the 88 dodge seat we put in there. It fit VERY well.
Having some problems with idle. It smokes white/blue mixed with black at idle, is loading up from running rich (could not see anything wrong in the carb) and I'm having to run way advanced to get it to run. And yes I did check to see if the damper had rotated, it had not.
Compression wasn't as good as I had hoped, but I've only put 2 miles on it and it has set for 10-15 years. Hopefully some driving will help that, The readings were 60, 56. 50, 42, 55, 51. I ran some marvel mystery oil down the carb, but hasn't helped any. And vacuum at idle is only 15-16.
Doesn't smoke too much when driving, but pretty much at idle. And this was before I added the marvel.

Bob,
at least you have a little time before she can drive. Does she have much interest in pickups. My granddaughter was all into the garage stuff until about 10. Now she's all girl.

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

These would be the pics dad took of his seat

I found it at a buddys place before I traded trucks
It fits amazingly well, it has studs made onto the base & dad just centered the seat & drilled
Oddly enough, there is a cab support rail right below were he drilled & didnt know it (its the one that runs at a diagonal) & on hole was on one side of it & the other hole on the other side

Perfect fit, it sits a lil lower than the stock seat which IMO is better & the bottom of the seat has a good angle on it to support your legs while driving
The back is rather low, but either way you dont have head rests, so you're screwed anyway

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

I changed out the carb and it idles better now. Went for a spin and it was really smoking.
I had gave up on the engine, it started smoking really bad. Matt came by and took it for a spin. I guess he blew the soot out of it cause its not smoking now.
Still doesn't idle right and I still have the timing advanced way beyond what the timing tab can read, but it is running better.
Anyway I hope to get the brake lights, dimmer and maybe the wipers working this weekend. I'm helping Matt get his engine together, so I'm not sure.
My windshield and gasket is suppose to be in this week. I would like to get it ready for a state inspection so I can tag it and drive it some.

Re: Project... Rusty but Trusty

Well I showed up at the shop today, to see the Burb jacked up in the air

So I walk up to dad & Im like, what the crap & point at the burb
He says take the black truck for a spin & see how much it smokes
So I hope in & take off down the road, NO SMOKE... so Im like WHAT THE CRAP !!!
And I keep putt'n along, THEN it starts puffing so I turn down a road that leads to a bunch of other roads & you can take a nice lil trip on them
SO I get on them & I find a nice strait away & I down shift to 2nd & VROOOOOM !!!
I wind it til it cant wind no more Choo choo, smoke like a train
Then it starts black smoking like its rich & then its stops
And I continue to putt along with no smoke to speak of
Everybody lives happily ever after
