Re: Mid 13's?
Okay Guys, lets get serious now :P Im only 18, so if some of my suggestions questions are getting annoyin just let me know. I was just curious as to what kind of power id need to move it into mid 13's low 14's. Im thinking a semi mild 454 could be a solution to this. Lots of torque. My head seems to be running in a million different directions.

Re: Mid 13's?
you could do it with less....and just spray it with another 150-200hp wet nos kit when you need the extra boost (like to take out a hot import).

Re: Mid 13's?
Yea, ive got a little bit of time to figure it out. Im still just trying to get the truck all redone bodywise. Should be lookin good before this school years done, then the motors getting built. More than likely just be a 355 hopped up a bit.

Thanks for that video! thats a ton of inspiration! i didnt think 13s would be that hard to come by. but anything over that should be huge money. Nice truck!

Re: Mid 13's?
I wasn't funning with ya, dude. To get a truck into the mid-13s just takes a lot of torque. Best way to get torque is with a big block (there's no replacement for displacement). And the second part of the discussion was, sometimes it's cheaper and easier to just buy an engne already done and have it sent to you. Lots of people (including me) will say, ahh I can build an engine cheaper than that. But it's not necessarily true.

Re: Mid 13's?
I have been there, my buddy had an eclipse turbo in high school. It was fast.
Budget will be your biggest problem. A lot of high schools down here have vo-tech programs where you can learn the automotive service trade. If you can get into one of those classes, you will have access to all the tools you need to hop up your motor. If you have access to a classroom like this, and your instructor isn't a total douche then you are made in the shade. Use your age as an advantage and get someone to help you learn the process of a build. Another option would be to get a job at a parts store with a machine shop and try to learn to build an engine through the machinist there. There is no easy answer to the question you are asking, with a 4500lb truck. weight and lack of weight transfer will hold you back almost as much as your budget. Re: Mid 13's?
"Horsepower sells cars and torque wins races" especially in 4500 lb trucks. Find a peanut port 454, you can pick them up cheap from any mid '70's to mid 90's truck, 750 4 barrel of any kind you want, nice voodoo cam, highrise, headers and 4.10's should get you close. It will fry the tires all day long and maybe the ricer will get lost in the smoke behind ya.

Re: Mid 13's?
67 camaro. Ran 13.60. (Altitude 1000 feet.) Had a 350, flat tops, MASSIVE home ported 2.02 steel heads, 750 DP holley, torker intake, powerglide, 3000 stall converter 10" slicks, 456 posi, 284/453 hydraulic cam. Weight 3150. So I'd say big block good heads big slicks solid cam and good luck.

Re: Mid 13's?
350 block, vortec heads, cam, intake, 650-750 carb, juice, stall, cal tracks, and slicks.
should get close to 400whp with that setup and its not too expensive.

My engine setup went 11.8 last year in a (CAR), put down 376rwhp. I'll probably see 380-390 this year with my setup due to a cam change and induction change. PS, those numbers were with world 'S/R' heads. S/R means STOCK REPLACEMENT. They don't even flow like the vortecs stock, but then again these aren't off the shelf heads.

Re: Mid 13's?
Is there a price difference when building small blocks? will a 400 cost more than a 350? not including the price of finding either one

Re: Mid 13's?
400 and 350 will cost the same to build. They share most of the same parts. But the finding and buying a 400 will cost you more.

Re: Mid 13's?
Is this truck your daily driver? If so, something else to factor in here is gas mileage. Can you afford to feed a hungry big block on a daily basis. Nothing wrong with dreaming, but keep the dreams as close to reality as feasible.

Re: Mid 13's?
Well its not so much gonna be a daily driver but more of a toy, drive it in the summers and store it in the winter. So big block isnt a problem. But the only downfall to a big block is their scarce down here. 350s are everywhere as well as any other sbc. I can also get a 327 (1964) ''replacement engine'' that would need a rebuild. Ive heard stories of the 327s being fast little motors in there day, but doubht theyd do well in a 4500lbs truck

Re: Mid 13's?
Nothing wrong with a 327, but a 350 is your best bet. Build a solid bottom end, a good set of heads, cam, and intake for a simple 350HP motor. Add a 100 shot kit and your good to go.

Re: Mid 13's?
Well it would be a couple peices at a time..the trucks gonna have a 305 for the time being and stock running gear, so it would be spread out from the beginning of this summer to be beginning of next summer. id say maybe 5,000-6,000 throughtout the year maybe more

Re: Mid 13's?
I don't know the exact 'specs' on this '66, but I do know its an all steel truck with a 400 sbc, tunnel ram with two Holleys, monster cam, cast Dart heads, racing th400, Ford 9" with 4.11's... It ran mid 12's at the Albuquerque dragway, over 5000' elevation... with a small block you can get big HP's without the big block weight...

Use one of those 350 blocks that you already have, and start by getting it machined. Have them clearance it for a 3.75 Crank, and buy a 383 rotating assy. Buy it balanced... and go from there. you will have a great Starting point to make an easy 400-450 HP and 475 ft lbs of torque, with the right Heads & Cam I have bought a couple of assy's from CNC-Motorsports... great Company http://www.cnc-motorsports.com/category.asp?CtgID=9001 Last edited by jrcaprai; 04-25-2011 at 12:41 PM. |
