Re: What type of oil do you use?

I really don't know if Valvoline VR1 would hurt our engines. According to the author of that thread he didn't think it had the right formulation for street driving and so could not be trusted. Others in the thread pointed out the according to Valvoline it could be used on the street. "Valvoline VR-1 Racing Motor Oil is recommended for engines burning gasoline and full or partial alcohol fuels in track and street service. Valvoline VR-1 Racing Motor Oil is for use in any car, light truck, van, or SUV where API “SM” is recommended(see proper viscosity grade below)." http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/VR-1_Racing_Motor_Oil.pdf My opinion is if Valvoline says it's good on the street and others have had good success with it then it's hard to argue against the evidence.

I live SE of Ralls which is on Hwy 82 about 30 mi from East Loop 289. Probably 45 min from Wolfforth. I noticed the trees in your avatar didn't look like West Texas trees and wondered if the photo was taken elsewhere.
Next time Old Yeller and I are in Lubbock maybe we can drop by for a visit.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

10 w40 mobile clean 5000 with Lucas oil stabilizer and a fram extra guard oil filter. I run this set-up in all my classic rigs. The lucas eliminates dry starts by bonding to the internal componets. I pulled the valve cover off of a car that I ran this in and left it off in the rainy season for 4 mths no rust started at all

Re: What type of oil do you use?

i run mobil1 15w50 in my flat tappet motors because it has the zddp for flat tappet cams. i started using mobil1 because my dad recommended it and it has never let me down. but with how hard these oils are to chase down(well for me anyway), i've been keepin my eyes out for a oem roller for the mrs 72 malibu.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

This thread is interesting. All I can gather from it is many people use many different types of oil and filter combinations for many years and all have excellent results. Sounds like any combo is a win win.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

Things to consider when selecting oil and filter combo's, just my opinion of course; what cam you are running, how often you change your oil, weekend cruiser or daily driver, work truck or pampered truck, and most importantly how heavy your right foot is!

After replacing two of my in-law's engines they ran dry, I have to agree that any oil beats no oil. And any oil change interval beats no oil change interval, too.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

Just switched mine to Royal Purple 10-30, seems to run cooler after switching from Pennzoil. ACDelco PF1218 filter, will not run a Fram on anything I own.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

I'm running Lubrication Engineers http://products.lelubricants.com/ite...0?&bc=100|1451
I've based the lube programs at my company on their products with excellent results and have been very happy with the oil so far in my truck. I'm running a 350 crate motor with a flat tappet cam.

I usually use a K&N filter. Too hard to get a filter wrench in their with my headers, and my hand is too big to fit and get a good grip, so that little nut on the bottom of the K&N works great for me.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

I've been running Valvoline since 1968 with one engine failure. I blame the failure on the builder. I agree with Wix or Purolator filters, but I change my oil regularly (3,000-5,000) miles and generally use Fram. We use 10W30 in the winter and 10W40 in the summer.

I have some company trucks approaching 300,000 miles with no problems.

We use Mobile Delvac in our diesels.

Honestly I wouldn't be afraid to use most of the oils listed.

Re: What type of oil do you use?

I'm a member of a car forum where a handful of people absolutely slam Fram filters, based on one guy's "scientific" investigation. I've been using Fram filters for decades (I'm 62) on all my vehicles and have yet to have an oil-related failure. Run the the lowest viscosity oil you can that keeps oil pressure. For flat tappet cams, STP is supposed to be a good product for providing ZDDP. My '68 Skylark now has tappet noise for about 2 seconds after startup since I put in some with the last oil change. I'll try not using it next time. The jury is out on what oil is best, for sure.
