What type of oil do you use?
I am coming up on 500 miles on my rebuilt engine. I used an engine breakin additive and was trying to decide what brand/weight/synthetic or non-synthetic oil to use.
Any advise???? Thanks

Re: What type of oil do you use?
I used Chevron 10W-30 for years (on sale and with a rebate, it was dirt cheap) but it's probably gonna be NAPA 10W-30 (by Valvoline, like lilred67 said) from now on. With a NAPA Gold (Wix) filter.

Re: What type of oil do you use?
Valvoline and red line additive. Newer oil does not have the zinc in it that the older engines need.

Re: What type of oil do you use?
my truck has over 358,000 miles on it,i started using the recycled oil as i call it from advance [you know the cheap oil]. started using hastings oil filters then changed to wix but can't get them from advance so i use fram.but at 250,000 i started using a quart of lucas with every oil change. my combo is 1qt lucas to 4qts 20w50. been good for me keeps me at 50lbs of oil pressure when driving down the road. idles at 35lbs pressure.

Re: What type of oil do you use?
Don't know if you saw this thread or not but I've been digesting it for the last 24 hrs. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=381780
Assuming you still have a flat tappet cam the biggest issue is with the amount of ZDDP being decreased from the modern oil formulations at the request of the car companies in order to cover the federally mandated catalytic converter warranty. The decrease in ZDDP isn't as big an issue for stock cams and spring loads. High lift cams with heavier springs can run into trouble without enough ZDDP. The modern formulations without enough ZDDP are designated API SM whereas the older formulations with enough ZDDP are designated SL or SJ. I just put Mobile 1 synthetic in Old Yeller right before finding out it doesn't have enough ZDDP so I'm going to add a bottle of ZDDP Plus and at the next oil change switch to Royal Purple. PS: It's nice to see a fellow formite over in the next county.

Re: What type of oil do you use?
Royal Purple oil and filter. Would run nothing else. I did run Castrol Synthetic oil for 20 years before switching.

I do have a flat tappet cam, before I read your info and the thread you referred to I bought Valvoline VR-1 which several board members said they use (at least in the engine drivetrain section). It is 20W 50, will this cause any problems with my engine? After reading more about the VR-1 it says it is for race engines or engines that are exposed to extreme heat and loads and not recommended for street applications. It seems there is so much info out there I don't know what to believe. You refer to the next county over, how far are you away from Lubbock? I just moved to this area and actually live in Wolfforth.
