Re: No correct 70 GMC grills for sale?

Sorry you had to go through all that Brad. It sucks to plunk down money for something that comes to you substandard.

I guess if I ever replace the rusted out grille in my '72 Super Custom, I'll be pretty sceptical of flaws under the black paint. Right now I'm doin' the "old farm truck that really hauls" type deal. But one day I'm gonna do some bodywork and paint this sucker. With new chrome too.

Thanks for the post. Good luck with your truck.

Gary

Edit: I might add that I've bought many parts from Wes (Classic Heartbeat) for my truck. He is local to me, and does go the extra step to make sure you get what you want and pay for.

Thanks Gary. I see 500 people have looked at this post so hopefully some good will come of it. In the mean time I'll have to make do with what I've got.

Re: No correct 70 GMC grills for sale?

Update: Steve at Classic Industries agreed to take back the grill, he was very nice about the whole thing. After I stripped the paint off the stamping flaws were obvious. Probably the whole batch is like that so my search for a flawless 70 GMC grill continues...

Re: No correct 70 GMC grills for sale?

OK I'm treading on Egg Shells here. I'm looking for a NEW Grill for MY 72 GMC, and dont want to go through taking the Black Paint off (already did on my OEM Grille.

So has anyone Found/Made Contact with anyone whe sells an "All Chrome Grille" (without the "GMC" in the Middle?

I was thinking (after watching American Restoration, that if I klived closer, I could take a new grille to this guy and have him use the Blaster (with Walnut Husks in it) to take off the Black paint and NOT screw up the Chrome.

alt option.... Or am I destined to get one and take the paint off myself?

If it's the alternate option, then is there anyone/company you'd recommend?

Re: No correct 70 GMC grills for sale?

Hey Roger, gettin the paint off was easy, aircraft stripper didn't hurt the chrome. The problem was the stamping wrinkles under the paint. Apparently all these re-pops are imported by the same guy in VA so it doesn't matter who you order one from, they all come from the same place.
Your 72 is a different stamping than the 70 I bought so you might get lucky, different stamping dies might not be as bad as what I showed in the pics. I'm sure they painted the 68-70 I bought to hide the flaws.
Call Wes at Classic Heartbeat, maybe he can help.

Re: No correct 70 GMC grills for sale?

Have you tried to see if a General Motors dealership can order you a factory grill? I know that seems far fetched, but they still sell grills for the 69-70 Chevrolet trucks. I don't know about GMC's. It would be well worth a shot though. I hope you can come up with an acceptable solution. Paul Baxter

Re: No correct 70 GMC grills for sale?

I'm not sure how much it would cost, but I was thinking of just making mine strait and then having it re chromed. I have a guy in town that has a new one that is all chrome, I will ask him where he got his or how he got it to look so good.

Re: No correct 70 GMC grills for sale?

I feel for you. There are no correct grills available for '69 - '70 Chevy's either. I hate the lack of attention to detail by some of these aftermarket supplies. Even if you drop $700 on the GM licensed '69 - '70 grill, it still is not correct. The only way you can even build a correct is to find a NOS grill from the 70's. Even the 80's weren't correct.

68-70 were all chrome..no paint. Maybe yours was a real late production run and has a 71 grill on it. If the center vertical is flat where it is painted it is a 71 or 72, if it comes to a point then it is the correct stamping with incorrect paint...just like the re-pop one on this post.
Not necessarily chrome. Mine has always been a gray or brushed aluminum color and has a black stripe around the headlight frames.

Yes it is very good chrome. Now mind you that was only the grill and top bar. I bought new NOS eyebrows as mine were beyond repair and found a beautiful set of original used headlight bezels
