Hmmm....I don't have any personal experience with them, was just my thinking. Check in the engine section...you'll probably get more hits on what to do with the bung there. Progress looks good

Re: I6 and a T5, Yet another cat skinned (65 C10 SBSS)
It had fire in it yesterday...started right up cold with no kickin the pedal and settled right in on slo idle with the weber and all my original jets/settings. Pretty happy I had the jetting good. The whole install is pretty. I gotta get a k&n and a decent looking top hat for the carbie......either that or letter the carb hat:

Re: I6 and a T5, Yet another cat skinned (65 C10 SBSS)
Very cool. Im getting much closer to having the big block done. Just have to figure out which stage clutch I want to use and will pretty much be ready. It will probably be spring before I do the swap due to the barn not quite being done. I'd like to do in indoors. And you know how wirey the weathers been. 20's in the morn 40-60's in the day and now mid 70's next week......can't keep up with it.

Do you remember the length of the driveshaft?
Thanks Larry |

Re: I6 and a T5, Yet another cat skinned (65 C10 SBSS)
Each truck could be a bit different due to weight on wheels, drop spindles, etc. Best thing is to put your fully configured truck on the ground and measure seal to parting line, output shaft projection behind trans rear seal, diameter you want, yoke spline count, etc.
See the Driveshaft Specialist (TX company) web sight for a worksheet on how to measure your driveshaft length and ID the yokes and joints. |

Re: I6 and a T5, Yet another cat skinned (65 C10 SBSS)
On my T5 swap, the measurement from the end of the T5 output shaft to the middle of the pinion u-joint was 54 1/4". The driveline shop cut my old driveshaft down to fit that dimension, and it fit perfectly. However, I did use the spacer between the tranny and bellhousingfor my installation, so that probably reduced the length by about 9/16".

I think when I get it back and finish up this install thread, the last post will be a bulleted step by step.....I'll link back to post numbers for pics and details. But this dude slid right in like Ol Doc's finger on the annual bung check.

Re: I6 and a T5, Yet another cat skinned (65 C10 SBSS)
A Mad Max fan I see. Yes, Layin Down A Rubber Road was the CB broadcast when the Night Rider Came thru, I believe it was Toe Cutter doing the broadcasting.
My favoritest movie - the Best Movie ever made and then they outdidit with the sequal opening with a Weiand in yer face!!!!! Back in them days ya didn't know it was a sequal till it started, no internet, no 5000 channels on the tv and ya had to look up the days tv schedule in the paper each morning and there were no stupid long titles like Mad Max II - The Road Warrior, Mad Max Returns to Avenge a Misbegotten World, they just called it The Road Warrior and figured ya were smart enough to figure it was a sequal before it was over. Gosh I miss them simpler days..... OH MY GOD though, talk bout boyhood hot rod fantasy, The Road Warrior opened with a Weiand in da face and howling suckin air at 8000 RPM and I didn't know whether I was gonna have a heart attack or blow my wad but I spilled popcorn and coke jumpin up and down innna theater seat hollern likea holy damn fool! Re: I6 and a T5, Yet another cat skinned (65 C10 SBSS)
Lookin at this link from TCI (Great auto transmissions BTW...used a Streetfighter TH350 on a 62 Impala 327 and what a trannie)
http://www.tciauto.com/tc/speedometer-gear-calculator/ If I assume my Drive gear is 7, 8 or 9 tooth and running the calculations I come up with a driven gear of 19, 22 or 24.68 (make it 25) to correct my speedo.... We shall see....FleaSlay, here I come! PS,....innerweb myth says it seems ya can use TH350 driven gears in the T5 if you install the Th350 driven gear houseing......another possible option? |

Re: I6 and a T5, Yet another cat skinned (65 C10 SBSS)
OkeyDoke. I can continue to fiddle with figures and guestimates of what gears its going to take to reduce my speedo 21 to 27% (depending on which innernet myth formula ya use...). So I'll just identify whats in there, get my tire size and call the shop. They will either have a driven gear I can use or I'll get the right ratio reducer.
Here we go........The driven gear....maybe a light green but its 20 teeth...darn that's bad because I need 4 to 5 more teeth and them gears just ain't no longer available....but we need to double check the drive gear first....If its a 7 (blue) I'm good, if its a 9 (Red) I need a driven gear that ain't no longer available. So.....measurements of the driven gear.... .8" ish gear dia, .310" ish shank diameter, shank length 1.75", over all length 2.25" and 20 teeth on this gear. Sittin flat on the floor, I only lost a few drops of ATF when pulling the driven gear assembly...hard part is cleaning out the blu goo which is a mandatory sealant for these old T5s or ya have a speedo leak all the time.....oh well, I'll clean it out now...but first... What color is the internal drive gear....Its RED. Dayum....9 teeth, so I need the rare and impossible to find 25 tooth driven gear or a $60ish ratio reducer..... And by the way...you can't count the grooves and call it a 6 tooth drive gear, ya gotta look at the ends where the main shaft goes thru to count teeth....if this one was off and sittin on the table like a doughnut, ya'd see 9 teeth around the perimeter of the gear. (Or you go to the speedo page and it tells ya on the T5, the red drive gear is 9 teeth!) So, on the speedo shop page, I plug in 9 teeth drive gear, 3.73 rear gear. 27.4" tires and it confirms I need a 25 tooth driven gear for correction of my speedo. Ah well, I'll call em Monday and see if they have the gear and if not, ratio corrector will be ordered instead. But I'd rather have the $11 gear. ------------------Follow Up-------------------- New speedo gear arrived. 24 teeth. Needed 25 but just not available. This will do. A touch bigger in diameter in the gear than the 20 tooth that's in there but should work fine....all the other dimensions are the same. Hopefully an install tonight or tomorrow morning and I'll post up here and get the test ride against the garman done...see where we're at. I know I'll have to blu goo the bullet again cause even with a new o-ring it pisses oil everywhere. Last edited by Sharps40; 12-29-2013 at 01:06 PM. |

Re: I6 and a T5, Yet another cat skinned (65 C10 SBSS)
I believe he has them rebuilt for him. I figured out after, we could specify information and the builder could change gears during the rebulid process.....if not specified, they come as they come evidently.
