Re: Door seal issue?

It's my understanding these seals are supposed to have a notch cut in the adjoining section when installed to release air that is trapped, so if you got one big air bubble filling the seal up and it's not releasing then this could be causing your issue as well....

We used Precision seals on mine and did not encounter this trouble.
The push on seals are precision brand.

As far as what they did at the factory I'm thinking the composition of the rubber could have been different 40+ years ago.
May be something to that, however I have had many NOS sets hear and the surface of the seal is slick. That could be mold release on them, but it definitely helps. WES

Mine are not push on type, they are the old fashion glue on type. My point being, we didn't have any trouble putting original style seals on and they were Precision brand. No pre/post-installation special treatment needed.

Re: Door seal issue?

Took off the push on ones because even after heating I could not get my door to shut. Got the Metro Superseal (glue on) and the door now shuts perfectly! I suspect the original factory rubber was softer and a different formulation than the modern seals.

Re: Door seal issue?

I bought two sets of seals, one of which was the Precision brand press on and the other were glue on. I had terrible luck with both, especially the press on. My doors wouldn't close. Then I spent the big bucks for the nos ones and yes there is a big difference! The nos ones WORK!

Re: Door seal issue?

okay guys im ready to put my seals in my rig and have a few questions.
ive got the glue on type.

do you need to glue on both sides of the the metal flange?
or just one? and which side if?
or is it just easier to put the glue in the rubber channel then install and the glue will spread all around the flange?

also do you glue a constant bead all around or just do spots along the way?

thanks

Re: Door seal issue?

Here is what I did:

I applied sealer to the inside of the seal AND to the metal part of the door. I waited a few minutes so it was tacky and then pressed the seal onto the door. I have been told to put the sealer on the seal and then use clips to hold it while it dries but the way I did it did not require them since the two stuck together immediately (I could still move the seal if needed).

I would also read the manufacturers directions first just in case they say otherwise.

I also used this method with gluing the headliner in. I was told to put a lot of adhesive on and then use a 2 X 4 to hold the headliner up to the roof until dry. By just spraying contact cement to the roof and headliner and letting them get tacky to the touch they formed a bond right away when pushed together and no force was needed to keep them together after that.

Does anyone else have a method that works?

Re: Door seal issue?

I got mine at the place down the street from me, Chevy Metal:

chevymetalrick@aol.com

You can also go to the Metro website and they will list their distributors.
