no i have not, all of are compressors are run off of CAT or WAUKESHA. pushing 2500-5000 HP

Count me in on the idea of finding a good running 454 and putting that in it....
As stated, these can be picked up pretty inexpensively...often with the TH400 still attached.
Make sure you check it out tho'...maybe a quick compression test?

There are 8.1s down here in the San Juan basin, but not to many. The company I work for mainly uses Ajax,arrow, 5.9 cummins, and Waukesha engines. We use Ajax, ingersol, and Quincy compressors.

the 454 i looked at today had 96,000 miles and was attached to a rusted out 91'chevy dually for $2300. i passed on it. tore the top half of my engine this evening to get a head start, incase i do not find a local engine in the next couple days. got to have my truck running early next week. i have a siding job to start and it would not lookto good if i show up with my ladders tied to my wife's car lol

cly. walls look very good i think, but the piston heads look like they have a lot of carbon buildup? what do you think? plus i found a some type of rag in the coolant area. all the push rods and lifters look good

Looks like an OK builder, but there is no way to do a quality rebuild in less than a week.

What are you going to do, clean and new bearings, or what's the actual plan besides removing the rag (!) someone left in the valley?

I just could not do that. So much time and effort to take it apart, clean it, put it together, put it in, dress it out, get it running. I would go buy a cheap pickup that you can sell later and do it once and do it right. You appear to be near Pittsburgh. On the Craigslist there is a rusty 78 Scottsdale 4x4 6cyl/3sp for $600 (looks like the bed is off). I would buy something like that to get you by until you can do the 402 right. Another option might be to buy a whole car with a small block and put that in until you can build it. I just could not bring myself to throw bearings in there and put it back in. You may damage it beyond repair with all the shavings floating around that you can't get out.

Looking at another 454 tomorrow. But I am going to change the crank bearings, cam, lifters , oil pump and push rods for now . and keep an eye on the oil. Looked like a lot of the metal came from the timing gear on the cam. And don't want another truck. Once I get the job done that I have lined up, I'm getting a more suitable truck for construction work.

How does one go about finding a motor that can be cleaned up, maybe the ridge knocked off, but small enough taper that it can be deglazed rather than bored out?

No idea myself, so asking. But I've come across a couple of my own, so it can't be uncommon. I guess they're already apart?
