Reminds me of a friend who built a casket in high school shop. he outfitted it with speaks and a stereo and used it to chill in.

Man, I love it! I once told my wife I wanted to buy my casket and use it for storage until I needed it so I could get some usefulness out of it before my time. Needless to say, she didn't agree.

This also eliminates one decision your family has to make at the worst time to make one. Good for you.

Put it on Craigslist for $25,000 dollars, I would NOT be surprised if someone paid full price for it, especially if they are going to be needing it!!!
ALL the emotions that get churned up when someones about to lose their place in this life, can be extreme. Final expense spending can go crazy, a lot of folks have it to spend, and want to BEST for their loved one!!!

Nice work ! My close friend Rick Smith passed last month from Covid. He owned a ran our local NAPA store, fantastic individual. Ran dirt track organization for years. When I attended his funeral I was taken back for a moment when I noticed no casket . He requested a coffee can for internment. Subtle for appropriate for Rick. I will miss him dearly.

I am loving this thread - good job on the casket. My imagination is running wild.

I'm "only" pushing 60, but with an elderly mother and an elderly mother in law (that lives with us) we are having a lot of end of life discussions.

I'm liking the coffee can idea, too. Maybe top it off with some old nuts and bolts.

I attended a memorial service for my friend Steve.. He passed away suddenly of a previously undiagnosed heart condition. He was 61 years old.

Steve and I worked at the GM Milford Proving Ground together. He was a mechanic through and through, with an affinity for engines and machines of all kinds. The memorial was held at his farm, about an hour north of where I live. The family had asked any of us with "hot rods" to drive them for a small display. I thought it would be fitting for me to drive my '87 pickup, since that's what he and I worked on when we were together. They also had his '67 GTO, his wife's '69 Chevelle (it was her car from before they were married) and his '72 Chevy pickup parked out in the grass.

Many of us heard Steve say, on more than one occasion, "...after I'm gone I want you to run my ashes through a Chevy big block, running at 4000 rpm. I want to see what the inside looks like." He even recently reminded one of his buddies: "you're gonna take care of that, right?"

Well - his memorial was the day. At the end of the service they fired up his '72, which has a 396 in it, and ran it up to 4000 rpm, while pouring some of his ashes down the carb throat. I sniffled a little.

A hot rodder to the very end.

A member of my reenacting group asked that his ashes be fired from one of the unit's cannons. I was not present that day, but the gun was fired out over a lake.

Your story reminded me if that event.

I don’t think it’ll be much heavier than a standard casket. The outside width is a few inches wider than a standard casket, so it will require a oversized vault.

I don’t have a lot in it, probably less than $500. The interior materials were the most expensive part of the project

My brother in law found a wicker basket casket in his tool shed after he bought his house.

There was a logo for "Frigid Fluid Products" on it, so we tried to contact them.

We were successful. They are still in business and make embalming fluid and related equipment. They said it was a "viewing basket", and it was pretty common to have one and display your relative in it in the days before funeral homes.
