Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

I have the turbo style mufflers on my 4x4 with headers and glasspacks on my 72 with stock iron manifolds. Both trucks have 2.5" pipes. The 4x4 has a bad tendancy to "resonate" at idle inside the cab. It can be annoying. Personally I prefer the glasspacks. They make my nipples hard!

Here's a bit of info that alot of people don't get though, the longer the glasspack the deeper the sound. If you use a 12" glasspack you're just going to get loud and poppy like echo chambers (which I hate). If you run a long glasspack like mine (30") then you get that deep mellow sound. You don't get backpressure from a glasspack, they're a straight through design as long as the core of the glasspack matches your pipes. Mine have true 2.5" cores. I'll give you a video of the glasspacks to listen to however, the exhaust sounds alot louder in the video than it really is.

Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

I just ordered the SpinTechs Sportsmaster XL's...as many have said it comes down to hearing taste. I had the Flowmaster 40's and the cab resonance noise was way to loud for my taste. Many years ago I had Cherry Bombs and they along with Thrush were the top dog back in those days for the younger crowd. The Sportsmasters will give the 402BB the low mellow muscle sound out the back w/o the high resonance noise in the cab. Lot of good info in this thread. Thanks all.

Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

I love the sound of Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, but for those whose budget is a little tight...Summit chambered race mufflers sound very similar and only cost $25

Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

I love the flowmaster sound... and if price is an issue... go with V-force.... made just like a flowmaster, just cheaper, and sound great, that is what is on my truck and I have complements on how good it sounds all the time. I think you have to find a dealer to get them though, I cant find them for sale online. I think FloPro makes them...

Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

In the 50's, it was Smitty's. Maybe even back into the 40's. In the 60's, glasspacks were just cans with packing in different shell lengths. When the Corvair Turbos came out, they became the hot ticket for performance mufflers. I had a '60 TR-3 that I installed a '66 Pontiac resonator on for a muffler. It was loud.....made the windows shake when I was downtown. But, the late '60's provided us with choices: Cyclone was one we had for options. Then, the Cherry Bombs came out ('68). Purple Hornies; Thrush; and others. Technology changed and we had baby turbos, chambered Walker mufflers, Flowmaster, Flowtech, etc.

I have 40's on my '69. I want some Cherry Bombs, purely for the nostalgia as they were a style that was at the top of the game in '69. I don't know/care about the power factor. At my age and with my truck still running the original engine/drivetrain (tweaked a bit), I can get into more trouble than I can afford. I do expect them to be a bit deeper in tone than I was used to hearing from them, though.

i have a 454BB with stock manifolds, and dual flo pro's 2chambers, paid$57 shipped for both...they sounded exactly the way what you are wanting...... i changed to 1chamber flo pro's and its louder but different tone than the 2 chambers...

Ok...I mispoke on the Spin Tech model type. The Spin Tech muffler that I purchased is the "Sportsman Street". This will enhance the 402BB sound w/o being overly intrusive with cab resonance. This muffer is better suited for early , Camaro's, Novas, Chevelles, etc… Time will tell.

Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

I’ve got the Spin Tech pro streets and they sound awesome. I have the 2.5 in w/ x pipe.

I was going to fab it all myself and after I cut the glass packs off and had to deal with mufflers hops for the small pieces I needed, I gave up installing my own “x”.
So for now I have 2.25 straight exhaust into 2.5 Spin Tech true duals out the back. I mounted them as far from the cab as I could, no drone / resonance at cruse, but when you give it some gas you’ll know it.

Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

I ran Doug's headers and 2.5" ID 40" long glasspacks on my 'burb, and now the same engine and exhaust piping is in my Blazer with Flowmasters and to me they sound almost identical. I'm 'gonna use the glasspacks behind my 454 on the Suburban for the time being just so I don't have to buy new mufflers.

Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

I have flow original 40 series and I don't so much care for them. They resonate too much and aren't loud enough when I want them to be. Everyone has them and they're kind of boring. They would sound better with longtubes and an x pipe though. I would get some classicchambered.com mufflers. They are like the original mufflers on some muscle cars and sound awesome. The exhaust my truck came with was a pair of very long blue streak glass packs that were quiet and as deep as you could get. But the idiots failed me at inspection for them and proceeded to sell us Flow 40's ( it was that or $ magnaflows $). Suspiciously convenient for them. I guess my truck was too quiet. They didn't leak either. So the moral of the story is, check your state laws on glass packs. The only time it'll matter really if a cop thinks they are too loud, or like me, the thieves either install new mufflers or hand you a fine. I had never heard of that law before.

Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

Flowmaster 40's for sure, I have had both and glasspacks are annoying on the freeway and just too loud. 40's will give you a nice low mid range but is quiet at freeway speeds.

Go to another shop? Sounds a bit to convenient. Glass packs are legal in TX.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Magnaflow! I am running these on my '69 SB. They sound smoother and more powerful than any flowmaster or GP that I've run in the past. Just make sure to run an H-pipe or they get a little raspy.

I don't know, they showed me and it seemed like an idiotic yet legit law, just no one really cares about it. My last truck burned up a few miles down the road after going there, but I had no evidence afterward of course. I just went there with this truck because they weren't busy and I figured an inspection is simple enough..

Re: Cherry Bomb vs Flowmaster series 40

I love the flowmasters myself. Super 40s are the way to go. My 90 GMC Sirrea GT has a mild 350 with true dual super 40s and no cats. It sounds amazing and I get tons of complements. Its a deep mellow tone, I find it best to folow them up with some long large diameter angle cut tips, for a nice crisp echo sound as well. I like the way this combination sounds. Bends effect sound to I like them straight out the back. My 71 has hooker mufflers of some kind been on it since i had it, it will be changed to flowmasters soon tho.
