Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)

I just spoke to Josh. He made it to Ft. Carson and is checked in.

All is well. His problem with the timing seems to have been that the vaccum advance had a bad diaphram in it. He installed a new one and now it's running ok.

Only remaining problem seems to be an exhaust leak on the right side where the front bolt on the rear port had the tip break off as we were installing it. The rest of the bolts were in and we didn't have any extractors anyway so we just left it to be fixed later.

Whizzbang, out.

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)

Hey everybody!!! Ft Carson is as beautiful as I had hoped. Not been able to get a straight answer on the smog check yet. A guy I knew in Baghdad told me not to sign in yet cause 2/2 IN BD is slated to deploy around Nov. He is in the 10th Special Forces Group and said he really needs me. So I told him I could give him a day to work it out. My old XO is the chief Human Resources guy at the hospital and called me on my cell and said he needed me too ( I feel like the #1 draft pick, lol if they only knew!!). So if one of these guys can snatch me up fine, if not, it's off to the 2/2 tomorrow. I stopped in at the onpost library to logon and say hi. You guys keep the shiny side up and I'll be on from time to time till I get my OL and kids here with my puter. Thanks again and if anyone needs me, my cell is always on.

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)

if you have to have it smogged just lean out the air/fuel ratio so that it passes smog....Then put it back to normal.

if it is the IM240 (like I suspect it is) that trick won't work.

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)

Great news!!! Just left the autocraft shop and there was a kid in the bay next to me building a camaro for racing. We struck up a conversation and he told me not to sweat the smog. Seems it will only be required here till the end of the year! He also said if they make me do it anyway the guys at the on-post inspection spot will (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) help you pass it.Then he goes in his trunk and gives me an Edelbrock 650 carb. Said he had too much junk and wasn't gonna use it anyway. Well I sure am!

So I got the exhaust leak fixed and will be working on the gauges soon as well as the carb and smog. Still fell like I oughta have more balls with a new 350 but it's running and it aint ticking or cutting out so I'm happy.

Re: Broke Down In Kansas (please Help!!!!)

Looking for some gitty up and go in the new engine. First of all it will loosen up as you drive it (new motor), second--it can be helped with timing--where did you say you had the timing set at? I remember you saying that it was set around 4 degrees (way to low) take the timing to 10 to 12 degrees and drive the truck, you will notice a difference. Adjust timing to where the truck does not "PING" when accelerating and does not diesel on when shutting the engine off. The carb is another factor---but the Edelbrock that you were given will need an adapter to be mounted on the "FACTORY" intake that you have (I believe) That way it will seal properly and then work to support the motor's needs without problem. Did the carb that the guy gave you have the GM adapter on it to allow for connecting the tranny TV cable and the cruise cable (if it works)? Get on line and get an installation sheet for that carb from Edelbrock, if you didn't get one. The last thing to consider, is the altitude that you are now living in-- you are a little higher up in the country now than before, so the acceleration will be off and tuneing will have to done to compensate for that.

Glad you made it Josh. Didn't realize there was another thread - I had been using the one in the 67-72 message board. Keep us updated as to which group you end up in.
