Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Trial and Error is expensive...

I was working on a brake upgrade for my FRONT Dana 60 to match the AAM rear I have now... Its a full float modern 14 bolt from a 2005 GMC 2500HD w/ Duramax and has factory dual piston calipers with integral drum in hat parking brake... There are actually two versions, one with a 10.5" ring gear and one with an 11.5" ring gear like the one I have.... Both seem to use the same calipers...

Not to hijack - my front brake upgrade thread is HERE

will have some more updates next week. Currently punching my hubs for 14mm studs for the rotors. It is looking like wont need the spacer / adapters for the rotors at the moment . Had everything trial fitted yesterday and looked good and all clearances working perfectly.

Yeah looking really good just figured out I can use factory hubcaps on the back of my truck now lol . Also found some dorman hubcap adapters for the newer metric caps to america studs on dormans website last night by happenstance. Will be posting pics here soon as I get completed parts in hand :d

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Hey Guys,
MEw developments. Things are starting to come together. Right now the machinist is reboring my stud holes in the hubs for the m14 studs. Got a complete set of them since they fit the rotors much better than my factory 1/2 studs and are allowing me to get rid of those stainless spacer. The stainless spacers were throwing the brake rotor out of alignment with the caliper bracket. Just trying to be patient with the machinist lol he is building parts for a racing motorcycle for his sons boss atm. For a retired gent he is dammed busy all the time. Be seeing him next friday evening and drop some cash in his pocet and see ifn I can speed him up some more. Will be picking a load of brake parts up from oreillys next friday as well. Shoes, pads, hoses etc. I found some metric to american line adapters that are going to help simplify the rear metal lines assembly on the axle very nicely. The newer truck use a hose with a T built in on the axle so will be able to make use of all the factory parts for the setup. After that a disc disc prop valve and will be putting the whole setup together and bleeding the system and see what we have . Finally a light at the end of the tunnel lol.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Mcm,
Yeah I have been going blind reading up on different parts setups for this project. You are right on the 05 trucks the 3/4 and 1 tons use one setup for both. The 2008 trucks like I am using the parts off of have two setups one for single and one for drw now. The ones for the drw are massive caliper dual piston. The ones I have for the srw are a smaller caliper but dual piston also.
I am also working on my fuel tank setup as we speak as well picked it up from auxtank yesterday and getting ready to throw some por 15 on it and get it toi the powdercoater . My brother keeps sayin I need to paint a smurf village in the thing lol.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Ok here is some of what I have been up to of late. I just got the disc brake adapter plates today and will be installing them sat morning and will get pictures when I do so.
So far it is looking good doing a test fit of the new parts saturday and see where I may or may not need adjustments. What took the longest was finding the right 14mm wheel studs with a shoulder that fit with the rotor/hub/tire depth.... Also the machinist had to make a mount for the hub so he could get the hub stud holes drilled perfectly centered each time. Took awhile but the results so far look promising

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Ok got some shots and the driver side plate mounted up. Looks like some more clearancing is in order and may need to shave the plate between 1/8 and 3/16th of an inch further to get the rotor centered in the brake bracket better. Will no more tommorrow night when I get the brake hardware in and the caplipers with pads mounted. Here area few pictures to whet yalls appetite . On the first picture you can see where I may need to shave the axle mounting flange just a bit on the bottom to clear the e brake cable lever fixing next week to get the lever in hand and mount it and see. Then will be trotting the adapter plate back to the machinist for some milling will start with 1/8 inch first and see where it puts the bracket next.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

ok got everything asssembled for the first test fit and I was right going to have to go back and take 1/8 inch off the back of the adapter plate to get the rotor centered in the caliper bracket like I have seen on the factory brake setups. So back to the machinist today and have hime whittle it down some more.
I may be looking around for someone that has a cnc mill to make some more of these plates for the gmc trucks that are 7 bolt plates and make a few more of these when the prototypes are finished. For other trucks will need a few things to get an idea as to the needs of that vehicle. When me and my wife get out property and I have my truck finished I may make a go at making kits for several different gm trucks and possible other makes as well when I have the space to get more axles to play around with Main thing to that is a way to get the adapter plates made that are strong enough but at same time reasonable price so they wont run up the bill of the kits.

That is the tough part. Do you know any structural engineers who could run a finite element analysis of the brackets to let you know where you stand? That would tell you where it could be thinned down or if you need more meat in any area so they won't fail but are still light weight.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Hey TT,
Good point will see what I can dig up out of the crew I hang with in dallas and see what they can come up with for me. as it is now the plates are 3/4 of an inch thick 6075 aluminum so they should be fairly robust. Will definitely check out the idea you just gave me and run with it. I about 3 years will have a full shop setup wher eI will be able to get some various axles in from the various chevy and other make n models trucks and make templates for the adapter plates then figure out what price range to run the kits at so I make a little money and not losing any. My Brother knows a guy with a full cnc mill in the basement of his house so will be trying to get a hold of him and see what kind of price he would run to cut the plates out them get my taps and dies ready for the bolt holes

Thanks for the awesome idea!

Sean

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Ok Guys things are coming along well had the plates shaved a tad too much luckily a washer fixed the brake sticking problem. The plates for the 6 bolt backing plate will come out to 13/16 inch thick at this time. I am going to continue with the washers in my setup for now until I can afford to have another set of plates made. On the e brake assembly everything went pretty smooth there but had to trim the bottom of the axle flange a bit to clear the ebrake lever and cable assembly. Will be assembling the passenger side this evening and see what happens. Here are some pics .

1st set is the flange originally and after mods

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Hey guys,
Dropped off one of the adapters and stainless bolt locators at a local Cnc shop to get an idea as too how much they will cost to reproduce. Should know more on that next week sometime. Trimming the bottim of the axle flange that little bit cleared the ebrake cable and lever so it moves freely now. I have a rear frame to axle hose in hand to start on next so I can adapt the American thread metal line to the metric hose setup. After that us completed will be making a frame hracket for the e brake cables and start in that pretty soon. Coming along pretty sweetly atm. My dodge is being a pia to me at the moment so the truck is getting some attention atm.
