I would look at the Powertrax by Richmond Gear pretty easy to install and and works well on the highway http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/lockright.html

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Hey there,
you got the d 60 with the 7 bolt backing plates? is it 8 lug hubs? I am working with a machinist friend of mine to adapt dodge d3500 rear discs to my 3/4 full floater axle as we speak. we are in the beginning stages so will post some more when I get it trial fitted together which should be in next few weeks.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

adapting the dodge brakes for the dana 60 sounds like a good idea.

i'd use a factory 2000+ GM 8 lug rear disc setup on a corp/eaton axle or the older 14 bolt unit.

i still have the stock drums on my 72 burb c20 and the idea of using an aftermarket kit or adapter on my HD truck scares me. i also don't like the idea of the e-brake in the caliper (if you even get an e-brake with some of those kits) . i prefer the other style with the min-drum brake where the center of the rotor is the drum.

advantes:

no mechanism to jam up in the caliper
the brake linings don't wear because they aren't used to stop
drum shoes generally have more surface area for more rolling resistance

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

yeah ironically llol the chevy gmc dodge and ford all use the same backing plates and assemblies from trw on their truck rear disc brakes. I am using a set of rotors from a 2004 chevy 3/4 ton truck. will be getting the adapter rings next week and get some pictures of how it looks put together.

I'm in the process of adapting 2001 Econoline 350 rear disc brakes to my '68 dana 60. I went with this setup because the Econolines are 8x6.5 and I work for a Ford dealer.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

I got some pics of the progress we are making today the delrin block is almost finished machining we did a test fit today to make sure things were going to line up properly in the axle. The centering ring for the newer checy rotor worked beautifully on the older hub that I have.

Ok guys n gals got more progress pics. Should be finishing this up in another 3 weeks and have designs sketches to share with yall. I have to get some more shorter 9/16 bolts at the moment will be picking them up tommorrow and getting all this on the axle after I finish getting the wifes new ride past inspection tommorrow will have more pictures then and do a trial fit of the brake brackets and calipers then back to the machinist for more trimming.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

got some more updates was working with the plastic design block and looks like will have to go back and take another thousandths or so of the facing area got a slight rub from the rotor on the backing plate atm. The caliper also had to be spaced to center the caliper on the rotor. But so far coming out very nicely. Will get with the machinist this wednesday and start finishing this up. And of course getting him paid off lol

here are some pics for yall that are watching this.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Well got the clearancing measurements done today. So far it looks like the the block needs to be thinned by 0.118 inches and a caliper bracket spacer needs to be made that is 0.445 inches thick now. the rotor was rubbing up against the backing plate tin now that that is clearanced should be good for final machining and assemble it. then next will be the custom brake likes for the axle and the hose also will probably reuse the dodge set that I have since they are in good shape. The brake pads are almost brand new as well so reusing them also. so far with the factory 3/4 studs have plenty of length to accomodate the rotor and a nice set of aluminum or alloy 8 lugs.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Well the machinist is a retired aerospace engineer lol. He does this as a help to us truckers. I will have a full set of plans and design sketches here after it is finished that you wil be able to take to any competent machinist and get the parts made. So far my cost for the machining alone is close to 360$. Picking up some bushings this wednesday along with the aluminum plates to take to him. the bushings I am going to file them gently and thin the barrel so I can insert them behind the rotor to keep the studs and rotor from moving. the stud is 1/2 inch and the stud hole on the the new rotor is 0.55 inches. I found some oillite bushings at a supplier here in dallas with an ID of 0.50 and OD .625 so should be able to gently file them down to fit. After that another 1/16th inch spacer behind the rotor should clear it from the backing plate. After that need to find some 9/16 opening spacers 3/4 inch width by .334 to .350 inches thick for the caliper bracket.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Hey Guys,
Got some more done today picked up the bushings from the supplier a whopping 12$ for them and the flat bushings lol. Got them on the hub and voila with the lugnut in place and the wheel on no movement of the rotor on the hub. The bushings are 1/2 IDx5/8 OD with a 1/16Invh flange thickness. Got some pictures below. did not need to thin the barrle on the bushings they slipped in and dont have much play in them so I feel a little more comfortable that the rotor isnt going to slide around when braking.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Awesome should have them ready after everything is assembled here in another 2 months. I am going to have to go to the dodge dealer to get part numbers for the backing plates. The calipers and caliper brackets can be bought at o'reillys and or autozone realtively cheaply. The machinist is making a new set of the bushings I bought from stainless steel so that here will be no slop in the rotor what so ever. je is also making a spacer bushing for the caliper bracket assembly.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

if you are using a 14 bolt you can still get all the factory disk brake stuff for a 2006 GMC or Chevy 2500HD, but if its the Dana 60 get stuff for the 3500HD, and a Eaton shure track for the posi.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Ok got some more info found the matching GM parts at gm parts giant and they use the same plate for 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton trucks. Just use different rotors for each model. Attached a parts schematic from gm parts giant for yall to eyeball. I checked parts prices versus gmpartsdirect and gm parts direct is cheaper than even this place on most items. Just trying to dig up the direct part number now through the local chevy dealers to simplify lookup.

Re: rear disc brakes on 3/4 ton and posi?

Got some parts numbers from chevrolet and dodge both The paltes are nearly identical. But if you get one or the other get the matching parts from the same vehicle. the chevy plates are a tad bit different for the caliper mounting bracket than the ford and the dodge.
