Re: 68 Second Chance

Was able to wrap up the interior this morning and moved on to putting on the bumper, sanding the patina into the drivers side mirror and mounting. then when I went to go for a joy ride in it and it would not start and was sounding like it was not getting fuel. So pulled of the feed side of the fuel pump to carb and stuck the hose into a plastic water bottle. Cranked it over for a while and not a drop of fuel. The lines were originally pretty dirty and tried cleaning out best I could so I will be installing a new fuel pump in the morning then go for a ride and pictures.

Here is a shot of the front fender door area after buffing, and a shot of the comparison from cab to bed.

Re: 68 Second Chance

Here is a shot of it in the sun after going for a ride. Second picture is a Photoshopped of it lowered which is where the new owner is taking this truck. Last one is another interior shot out in the sun.

Re: 68 Second Chance

I really like what you've done with this one. We just picked up a 69 this weekend and it's in very similar shape to yours and the same color. We're debating on whether to do what you've done or strip it down and redo everything. But I would like to restore the gauges and redo the bench seat like you did.

On the CLR process, did you use a red or grey scotchbrite? And what was your process for buffing the old paint?

Appreciate the props. It was a fun one to work on and see where it would go with just a little care.

For the gauges I just took it apart and did a really good cleaning. then did two coats of fluorescent paint on the needles. For the plastic cluster lens I used a 'Micro Mesh kit" (here is link to kit I used) that I have had for about twenty years to polish out all the scratches and wear. After that I used the Meguiar's Cleaner Wax (See pict 1) to buff and polish the lens on both sides.

For the CLR treatment I used a 50/50 mix of the CLR to hot water and used a new Gray Scotchbrite pad.

For the buffing of the paint I did a really good cleaning of the truck with power washer and then went over once more with soap and a good microfiber scrub mitt. I used a Griot's orbital buffer with the orange foam pad I bought in a kit (See pict 2) a few years ago to do some restoration on my RV. Used the Groits "Complete Compound" (See pict 3) that came with the kit and really liked how worked and especial how easy it was to just go over with a clean microfiber towel to get the shine you saw in the pictures.

Re: 68 Second Chance

Ok now I feel that the truck has come full circle. I reached out to the people I bought the truck from and sent them a nice note and pictures like I promised. I received a very nice message back from them and happy to say the 68 got its Second Chance. Truck is being picked up Saturday by it's new owner.

Good man. This helps all of us by keeping them on the road.
