Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

I got around to putting on the front sway bar to go with the rear one...
Man, this thing takes corners really good now, @ high speed w/little to no tire squeal...

So I've heard, because I drive defensively & always obey the speed limit...

I got the bed put back on with the help of some friends & neighbors who are living vicariously through my truck build & are happy to lend a hand...

Once the bed was in place & strapped down it looked something like this...

After having the bed off for so long, the truck looked weird to me...

I popped some measurements and drilled the hole for the gas filla'...

I was then able to run the tubing & try to install the gas cap, but...
Like everything else goes in a build, it of course had to be modified to fit...

I LOVE my Dremel tool...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

If you take a close look @ the bed instal with friends pic, you will see a roll pan, & REALLY THICK BONDO covering the rear light areas... No good...

This real thick bondo theme was carried over to ALL the dents & dings on this bed... Some of it was more than a half inch thick... So...

Grinder, check... Stripping disc, check... Respirator, check...

Those items & lots of dirty work later... She was stripped naked...

To prevent flash rust while I do other aspects of the truck I busted out the trusty rattle can of self etching primer and went to town...

I refer to this as the "Bonny & Clyde" side...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

Since I am building this with an old school shop truck theme.
I had to keep the original rear bumper that came with the truck when it rolled of the car lot in North Little Rock, AR.

I dig seeing these old bumpers, too many have been tossed for that shiny, stuff...

It was time for a fresh start for this old bumper... Captain Krylon style...

Got it straightened out, primed & chiseled out all the old paint out of those stamped letters...

I shot the final coat using the same hammered finish silver as I used on the wheels...

Give it a few days to cure and then I'll get it mounted...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

The front bumper is only a temporary one...
I plan on having the front one painted to match the grill, the cab top, and the redneck mirrors...

Here is what it looks like with bump stops...

Well, now you are up to date on the truck... Well, almost...

I won't tell you what is coming next, you'll have to stay tuned in & see...

Looking good. Makes you wonder why they bothered drilling all the holes when the dent is still there. Maybe it was smacked in again in the same spot. I had worse on my jimmy and used a deflated football stuffed up in between the outer and inner bedside, then inflated it to pop it back out. Just put the inflator nozzle in the ball before you stuff it in. Its in my build thread somewhere.

Thanks... Great idea... I'll give it a try...
Yes, the bed got popped in the same place again, hence the dent plus all the really cool tack welding opportunities...

I have another bedside that needs work as well...
I would like to try and fix this one up as I'm afraid to dismantle this one and open up that whole can 'o worms...
I'll cross that bridge if & when I have too...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

WOW !!!

It's been since September since I posted an update...
I'm not one who knows what "resting" or "downtime" means...
I would much rather be doing stuff as opposed to typing about it @ a desk...

Well, with that being said, I've been down with the Flu since Saturday.
(Funny, that's what forced me to start this build thread to begin with)

I felt well enough today to crawl from my fetal position in bed, drag myself to the CPU to update my truck fiend friends on my beater... Here it goes...

I told you to stay tuned in the last post as I had a few things in the works,
the first being a CL find of a NIB item I wanted from the beginning of my build...

Drum roll...

I had a friend @ Area 51 (The Gateway to Hot Rod Heaven) help me mount it up and so far it hasn't flown off as I blaze down the roadways at speed...

Also take note of the tailgate installed for the first time as well...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

I do my absolute best to earn cash for my truck through, barter, swap, trade, selling of old parts & stuff, etc. as opposed to taking it out of the bank account...
This is a great way to keep the "accountant" happy and peace rules our world...

On one of my many side jobs to earn hot rod cash earned me a really cool find from a house I was helping some people move out of...

A 1967/1968 Coleman cooler in INCREDIBLE shape...
I can't decide to keep it original or to color match it to the truck color...

Decisions... I'm leaning towards keeping it "as-is."
It is so clean to be this old...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

A buddy at work caught the C-10 bug when I drove my truck to work a few times and next thing I know he has 3 of them at his place...

The not so crazy thing about it is, he now has parts, but lacks mechanical skills to make three trucks into one... (Barter/Trades abound)

He had a seat that was in the "parts truck" that was in WAY better shape than mine... Services were needed and a deal was struck...

My new seat... Before...

The seat was in good shape, but it wasn't "Hugger Orange."
I looked at all the aftermarket stuff in the catalogs and liked the Black/Orange Hounds tooth cover the most...

I try to do my business locally as much as I can, but when those local prices are 50% - 100% higher than everyone elsewhere, I cant justify it on my low budget build...
Most upholstery shops around here wouldn't even re-skin my seat in plain, smooth, black vinyl for less than 5 bills... OUCH...

Guess what...
Capt. Krylon is gonna' learn him some upholstery skills first hand...

I tore the old/new seat apart for an assessment and a freshen up with... Krylon Black...

Not bad really, only found one broken spring on the drivers side...
Swiped one from my current seat and replaced it...

I stumbled upon this shop while pursuing Flea-Bay...

www.ricksupholstery.com out of Tennessee...

Great people, products, prices, the whole nine yards...

I had them build one the way I wanted it for 1/3 of the local folks...

Check out their work if your in the market... I'm a very happy customer...

Never having done this before, I was pleased with the results as well...

Just have a friend help pull, hold and stretch while you place the hog ring in the proper place... Take your time...
Save ton's - 'O - $$$...

Man, that new seat make that rubber mat look pretty cruddy huh?

Nice cooler, that is in super good shape... just needs some old school hot rod pin stripes and strapped into the bed!

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

I scored another item I always had in the works for this build on CL...

When I saw the price (LOW LOW LOW) I was sure they did not work...

They did, the video does nothing to portray the db level of these, his air tank had 10 psi left when this was taken...
It needs 125 psi to really "work."

Brought them home, gave them a 125 psi blast for my girls...

They say the train track, (a mile away) reminds them of these every time a choo-choo train goes by... I love it...

I gave them a cleaning and Santa placed them under the tree along with a 10 gal. tank for me...

Thanks, St. Nick...

I found the perfect place for them and got them mounted up...
I still need to make a splash/rock guard for them but that's a cinch...

I've got the plumbing all sorted out just waiting on my pneumatic push button to come in from an UN-named source... Soon, very, soon...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

This build has only one rhyme and reason... CHEAP IS GOOD !!!

So, when I "find a deal" on stuff that I have on the dry eraser board and cash in the Hot Rod fund, I pull the trigger...

I'll let the pic's do the talkin'...

Before vs. After...

So, there you have it... You are up to date... Well, kinda'...

Stay tuned in, I'll be back with updates... Eventually...

Thanks... I was so stoked to get it...
They had no idea why I wanted this old thing...

This was just one of many freebies given to me for free in addition to the cash for the services rendered...

In my head, I would have done the job for the cooler alone...
Ones like it in the same shape are fetching 2 bills + on Flea-Bay...
This one "free"... Priceless...
