No Title

I just bought a 1971 GMC K20 with no title. In Wisconsin we need a title to register. Has anyone had luck getting an old title and changed VIN numbers? Any advise?

call your local DMV. The laws differ state to state.

Here in Arkansas I just call a State Trooper, he runs the vin and signs a paper and it's a done deal. Takes 15mins and I have a paper if it's clean and clear.

I've used these guys twice. Very easy and very fast. It does cost a little bit of money but keeps you from having to do all the leg work yourself.

Contact your local DMV and ensure everything is done properly...

Do the leg work before you spend anymore money on your truck - if it is stolen or has other insurance issues they have the right to claim thier property back

Is it that there was a lein holder? Not registered for years and dropped out of the DMV database? Previous owner lost it?

there are some companies that will issue a title for just about anything. but with newer stuff like this it is possible they issue you a title you have the money invested the truck is on the road then theres a knock on the door and it aint your truck anymore// its a real bad idea to use a titleless truck for any more than a parts vehicle unless you are very sure of it's history

Here in California all you need is the deed to your house and/or the parental rights waved to your first born.

I bought the truck from an old farmer than lost the title. I called the DMV and told them the situation that I bought this truck and will only be using the drivetrain as it is a 4x4. I also bought a different cab, and will be buying all of the other components necessary to piece this together. I was told that if I had a list of all of the major components along with bills of sale I could get it titled here as homebuilt truck. Does this sound correct or the wrong way to approach?

If he is the legal owner he should be able to apply for a replacement due to a lost title. In Arkansas it's $5.

It is the same in MN.

If you are putting a different cab on the chassis. Use the title for the cab you are going to use.

I wish the cab had a title to use. Just got a rust free cab out of a junk yard in Wisconsin. Small yard with about 20 old trucks in it. Sort of a private deal and you have to know the right people to get in. Well in the middle of a clump of trees surrounded by scrap piles and trucks was this cab. It was sitting on a bunch of scrap frames. Solid and as nice as you would find anywhere. We had to cut trees and lift over trucks to get out, which is the reason I believe it was still there. Anyway I have a nice 4x4 drivetrain and a nice cab. I can see it coming together, but will need to get the title issue solved somehow. Owner of the truck that drivetrain came from has had for 20plus years and does not know if he ever had or put title in his name. For now I am just accumulating parts with bills of sale and will see what happens.

Well as long as the cab that you are gonna use has a vin plate, you can go through the title company I posted above.

I can tell you exactly how your situation would play out in Ca. If the person you bought the truck from was in fact the registered owner all you would need is a bill of sale and fill out a lost title form, done. I would register the truck with the existing title before making any modifications. Then switch whatever you want. If you try and do it from different trucks, at least in Ca, you risk having a blue tag vin or a "special construction" vehicle. This means smog and a whole list of other BS to deal with. But again, this is Ca. Most laws are similar, and Ca is usually the toughest.

i have swapped may vin plates, its easy if you get the right deal/vehicle. it sucks when back fees are owed. last 2 that i did cost my $550 and $650 in fee's. but i got 2 clean titles for free and 2 ***** n trucks, one was a no title and one WAS a smogger.

Couple questions:

1) Why are you concerned about the title if you're swapping everything around? Just register it with whatever cab you put on it.

2) This is hindsight I realize, but I'd NEVER have picked up that truck without knowing what I was in for. I've seen too many long drawn out issues that cost a lot of money to clear up.

I do not have a title for either the 71 truck or the cab.

It started out as a cheap 4x4 truck that I was going to part out as the body is rusted bad, but then I bought a near perfect cab within a week and thought of putting the two together. It was an afterthoought after buying two good deals for resale. If it is a hassle or costly to title I will just go with the original plan of selling them.
