Dually Alcoa question
I bought some used Alcoa's for my Dually this past weekend.
The guy said they came with the lugs and caps, but when I got home the box was only lug-nut caps, but no lug-nuts. The wholesale on the lug-nuts is over $7 each(!) from Alcoa so I was wondering what other options might be available? I was anxious to mount them on my truck so I went ahead and installed them using the compression rings from the steel wheels I removed. In talking the guy at Les Schwab's he is telling me that I absolutely cannot do this as the rims aren't designed to be mounted this way. The guy from Discount said you are not supposed to do that, but only because the rings will mar the rims? Any input? Also, looking at the Alcoa website they don't show a lug cover for the light-duty/16" rims. I was thinking that I could run some covers like on simulators, but if the LS guy is right, this is not feasible. Thoughts?

Re: Dually Alcoa question
My Alcoa's have a washer that is flat on one side and conical on the lugnut side. The wheels are hub centric if I remember correctly.
At $7 per lugnut I have some that have a little rust or chrome peeling, I'm not paying that for lugnuts!

Re: Dually Alcoa question
There are two types of wheels on large trucks, hub piloted and stud piloted. Your wheels are hub piloted which has a flat surface where the lug nuts mount. You have to use the specified but which looks like it has a swiveling washer on the bottom. If you use the other style lug nuts or the ring the wheel will not seat properly and will damage wheels or they could potentially come off of the truck. Check out www.southwestwheel.com and you may be able to get them cheaper. This isn't something you want to skimp on though.
Edit- their part number is 139987. It's 9/16-18 lug nut and they are $3.95 each |

Re: Dually Alcoa question
The wheels came with a set of lug-covers like these.
Do you think it would be possible to run a set of the hub covers from simulators on the Alcoa's?

Re: Dually Alcoa question
First what is the part number on your wheels. There are stud and hub pilot wheels. The ALCOA site will tell you what you have. The site also shows the nuts and nut covers for the hub piloted wheels. Find your hub dia. from your part number, then look at what hub covers are available. You can search ALCOA on 67-72 and find old ALCOA catalog info if your part number is not listed on ALCOAs current site.

Re: Dually Alcoa question
I am pretty sure they are hub-piloted.
I looked through the Alcoa catalog and sent a message to them and they don't offer "hub covers" for the 16" light-duty wheels. But since the stock steel wheels are a flat surface and the compression rings are a flat surface (two flat mating surfaces) and it is OK to run the ring for mounting the Simulator hub covers under the compression ring, it seems that it should be OK to do the same under the 2-piece lug-nuts for the Alcoas?

Re: Dually Alcoa question
I lightly buzzed them w/a 3M wheel on my angle grinder occassionally to keep the rusting as limited as possible.

Re: Dually Alcoa question
So I had a moment of brilliance.
I was going through my dialed numbers on my cell-phone and came upon the number for the guy I bought the wheels from; thought it couldn't hurt to call and ask if he had the lug-nuts? He said he was hoping I would get a hold of him because he found the lug-nuts and center caps for the wheels! Drove 40 miles each way to go get them and just went to put them on, but couldn't get them to thread on??? Looked at the Alcoa website and sure enough, the lug-nuts have an "M14" on them Looks like I still need to get the correct lug-nuts... Are these trucks 5/8-18 or 9/16-18?

Its all there the caps 003611, 003612. The lug nuts 139987, the covers 019001. We still dont know the ALCOA part # stamped on your wheel which will tell if it is Chevy, Ford, Dodge and the hub bore.

Re: Dually Alcoa question
Best I can tell is both rear rims are stamped C92545.
the Google isn't helping me out with a search of that number though?

Re: Dually Alcoa question
No, it does not appear to be a good and or popular #. The only clue you have is the metric nuts that came with it and the measurement of the hub bore.

Re: Dually Alcoa question
I bought a set of 32 of ebay for like 56$ i think. They are 9/16-18 flanged dodge dually lug nuts. they were black in color. I just gave them a coat of black paint to slow down any rust. Im trying to find the link to them. They are not fancy or chrome but all my shrome ones were stripping out anytime i touched them and these do alot better!!

Re: Dually Alcoa question
I have a set of the 03-11 9/16"-18 flanged Dodge lug nuts & they look very similar to those in the link.

Re: Dually Alcoa question
If the flange will rotate on the lug nut then that'll work too. A few trucks used them the Ford ones just looked the best to me when I was looking for them to replace my raggedy chrome ones. I bought a die as well and chased all my threads just to make sure the stripped out lug nuts didn't mess them up and to straighten them out if they did.

Re: Dually Alcoa question
These should be able to be used with the Alcoa's, or similar aluminum wheels with a flat mating surface?
But probably won't be able to use the nut covers I have? Quote:
Are you using these with Aluminum or steel wheels? Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Dually Alcoa question
Is the black ring a Dodge thing? If not, what was/is its purpose?
It seems that I should be able to run the standard compression ring/lug-nuts with the hub cover mount underneath it. Like on the stock steel wheels?

Check w/rs72z.... But.... I recall the 'hub' caps installed from the outside & will not fit from behind.

Re: Dually Alcoa question
It was a cheapy hub cap that was on them originally when i got the truck. They were bad rusted so i cleaned them up and painted them black till i get some real alcoa caps.

Re: Dually Alcoa question
Here is where I am at now.
I just used the compression ring and the crusty nuts that were on there. The caps I was given with the wheels look to be held in place by the lug nuts; each lug nut overlaps the lip of the cap a smidgen. I can't run those until I get the Alcoa lug-nuts. I would like to run the hub covers off some simulators, but if that is not advisable I will bite the bullet and buy the proper lugs and use the caps and nut covers I have |

Re: Dually Alcoa question
The lug nuts i have will hold the alcoa caps in place. However if you want the all Chrome look then your either gonna have to have the cheapy lug nuts plated or buy the expensive ones. Unfortunatley theres not really any alternatives. if you look up txfirefighter dually buld you can see what he did. pretty similiar to me but he has alcoa caps.

Re: Dually Alcoa question
I didn't understand what you were saying at first but now I think I understand.
Yes, the Alcoa center caps are installed from the outside. What I was proposing is to run the mounts for the simulator hub covers under the compression ring - between the compression ring and the outside of the wheel. Similar to what monte0185 has on his wheels. Seems feasible, but if it is a risk of a mounting failure then I will forget the idea? Quote:
I have the centers, and the lug-nut caps/covers but think the simulator hub covers would be a cleaner look. My gf is telling me to stop dinking (or another similar word...) around and just buy the lug nuts and get on with my life! Quote:
