Brake hiss...

Help...

I'm having a little brake trouble on my '87 burb. When I depress the brake pedal, I hear a hiss that sounds like a small vacuum line hissing air. This persists about half the pedal travel and I have no brake power. Then on the bottom half of the travel, the hiss stops (mostly) and I get brakes. There is a place along the travel that I can hold the pedal at and get a constant hiss and no brakes at all. What is this?

It is your brake booster. I had the exact same problem, put in another one with a 12-month warranty, and 13 months later it did it again @#$%*^%$. I was so excited... If its the first time you've changed it, you have my sympathies.

Also, if your master cylinder is leaking into the booster, that will kill it.

Yes, its the booster, or the little plastic piece that the hose connects too.....pretty common for the to crack with heat/age and they arent very expensive....check that and the hose for leaks first (it may be dry-rotted).

Thanks...

Thanks for the info y'all. Is this piece inside or outside the firewall... I've never replaced one, but I have replaced my master cylender 3 times

The plastic piece is a check valve that is located on the booster in the engine compartment. It has a hose that runs to a vacuum source (mine goes to the carb).
