brake light

i have a 1988 chevy half ton, the brake light on dash stays on all the time, while switch is on, can any one tell me why, the pads are all good, the rear wheel cylinders have been replaced, fronts are working ok. i have tried pulling up on the emergency brake pedal but does not make light go off.

There are only a few things that you can do unless you have diagnostic equipment so as to pull the trouble code that indicates the problem area or faulty component. In addition to what you have already indicated you have checked:
1 Check the electrical connections at the control unit (mounted under master cyl)

2 Check all fuses

3 Follow the wiring harness to the speed sensor(s) and brake light switch and
make sure all connections are secure and that wiring is not damaged.

If this does not help vehicle needs to be diagnosed by a dealer service department. Hope this helps.

Hi hairless

There are three brightness levels of the dash brake indicator light on your truck.

Brightest – park brake
Medium – Combination valve (aka metering & proportioning valve)
Dim – RWAL System

Watch the light very closely and apply the parking brake. Did the light get brighter?

Are you pushing the brake pedal or the "park" brake pedal?
Unplug the wire from the park brake pedal assembly to see if it goes off.

If it makes no difference when you push the park brake then I agree with 99-2door.

well i have checked the wires under the hood next to the master cylinder, the plugs are all ok, next i went to the brake pedal and checked the plug there, plug is ok. but now the light is off, will have to watch it and see if it comes on again, and start all over checking each connection and then checking light to see if it goes out, to tell which fixes problem.
thanks to all for info.
