I'm not familiar with Alabama Motor vehicle laws, but I find it odd that they wouldn't title a vehicle due to it's age. I am a County Treasurer in South Dakota, and part of my job is titling & licensing vehicles. I would check with the Alabama motor vehicle department directly if that is not where you got the information. In South Dakota, you would have to have a title for the vehicle to transfer ownership between private individuals, unless the previous state didn't title the vehicle. I've seen this on trailers, boats etc. from other states, but never on an actual vehicle. I can make some inquiries for you at work monday and get back to you.

According to a book I have in my office, Alabama does not require 1974 & older vehicles to be titled, but they are not prohibited from being titled. Oddly, they do require a title to transfer ownership in state, regardless of age. Kentucky requires a valid registration and a notarized bill of sale on vehicles which are not titled. Have you contacted the previous owner and asked him to get you a title? Offer to reimburse him for the costs and maybe he'll help you out. Other than that, I don't know what to tell you. Unfortunately, every state does things a little differently when it comes to title & license. South Dakota requires all vehicles to be titled, including ATV's, boats, trailers and vehicles which don't run.

Here in Okla, you have to title vehicles. I know a guy that "obtained" a old "fixer up" pickup with no title. During restoration, he just retained the parts receipts, labor receipts, etc, to verify the vehicle had not been operable in past years. Once restortation was complete, the took all receipts to the tag agent, explained that the pickup was on property the purchased, not running, and he restored it. They issued him a title.
