Question 4x4 Question

I'm sure many of you guys know the answer to this: Can the power steering box and column from a 2wd C-20 be used on a 4x4 K-20 frame??

Thanks for your guidance,
72longbed

The column yes but not the gear box unless you do a cross over steering set up. But then you'd need to have the pass side steering knuckle modified, and a new drag link made. Truck would also have to be lifted.

Lift should be over 6" for cross-over too.

OK,
so what power steering box is in a 'factory' K-20 with power steering? And what if the 4x4 is manual steering and you want to convert it to power?

Thanks again,
72longbed

72 Longbed, aren't you the one who got the trailing arm from me? I Have one of those PS boxes, good for a core at least.

Longhorn4x4,
are the power steering boxes the same, (2wd vs. 4wd), with just a different pitman arm?

Thanks,
72longbed

not a pro, but i think 4x4s are on the inside of the frame, and 2wd are on the outside. but when i put ps on my truck it had to be 71-87 2wd 1/2 ton period

It is a different box and a different pitman arm. You will have to find a donor 4x4, buy one off this board. or purchase a new one. I put a box from AGR on mine.

69-72 K-5,K10,K20 ps boxes will all interchange, and they are different than their 2wd counterpart.

Thumbs up

Thanks GM72K10 and everybody else, I finally understand what I need now. I've been kicking around the idea of finding a 71 or 72 4x4 rolling chassis and hanging all of my sheet metal and drive train on it. I want to be prepared if I can only find a 'manual steering' chassis as a donor. I'll be selling my 2wd rolling chassis on this board or E-Bay if anybody is interested. Now that I've replaced all the wear parts from front to back it's time to sell it, right...?

Thanks again,
72longbed

(anybody know of any good 4x4 rolling chassis around PA, prefer 3/4 ton?)
Let me know.
