New project - tell me what you think...

I was given a totally rust free 1984 Chevy 1/2 ton long bed and here are my plans...
  • - Sonny Leonard big block.
    - THM 400 stengthened to withstand the SL
    - dually bed to cover huge tires
    - L 88 hood
    - Baldwin Motion paint scheme in red with black stripes
    - Full custom interior
    - posi rear from a mid 70s Cadillac ambulance (basically a 3/4 ton axle retaining a 5 lug bolt pattern and it's a bolt in.)

B/M paint scheme:

From what I remember (yep, I'm old) The original funny cars came about by shorting the wheelbase.
The were wierd or "funny" looking which is how they got the name "funny car".

I will see if I can find a picture of one.

i know im a youn one, but i remeber a story in hotrod and looking at old photos, the funny cars shifted there wheel base, like the moves the rear end up 4 inches and the front end up 4 inches too, this was to try to get the engine sitting closer to the middle, without hacking into the firewall and such. and im 6'2 so i need the 8 foot bed

i have a friend who is 6'7" and he has a shortbed. what does the height have to do with the length of the bed on your truck?

short wheelbases hook up better, because of the shorter leverage arm that is the entire truck. it allows more weight to be lifted and then transferred to the rear tires (front will actually get lighter, perhaps show some daylight under the tires in extreme cases) with a lwb it takes more power to transfer the same weight, and is more difficult to channel to the rear tires, due to less of the entire weight of the truck over them.

i like the overall idea, as it sounds cool. however i have seen a couple duallies with a single wide tire, and it just doesnt look right. if it were me building the truck, stick with the Baldwin Motion theme, and build a short wheelbase standard fleetside truck with a Dana 60 or something, 4 linked out back. much cleaner looking, much more functional, and quite possibly cheaper.

Don't forget, a long bed will weigh more than a short bed...providing both trucks are set up similar. The lighter you are, the faster you are.

a 6'2 person can't sleep in an 8 footbed, twas mearly a joke that i have with my friends at school, in an all our racing truck, you would want a short box, but in a daily driver you would want a long wheel base, the longer the wheel base the more stable it will be, just my 2 cents

The truck, BBC, tires and rear end I already have... It was either go with the BBC or build a 455 Pontiac and go with a 1969 Trans Am paint scheme and i didn't want to do that... The Caddy rear will handle anything I throw at it, as it has already been in use in, 1: an ambulance, then a 409 shortbed stepside (broke many a tranny, but the rear end held up VERY well.) i want to come up with a good handling suspension for it... And yes, I wanna take on that new 500 hp Dodge... hehehe

When im rich (bah ha ha) I'm gonna have about 4 or 5 C/K trucks. I already got my short steppie. I want a long fleet 2WD, a short fleet 4x4, and a short fleet 2WD, and a short fleet 4x4.
Who needs one of those new plastic trucks?
