Remmeber that you'll have to CUT off the extentions of your frame that the bumper bolts too...which will cause you to fail your anual inspection.
Even if you have a buddy that'll hook you up with a sticker, front bumpers have been federally mandated since christ was a corpral and any cop anywhere can give you a ticket.

just something to think about.

That's why You see trucks with roll pans on the rear, but not the front. There was a black truck on here a couple days ago that had a smoothed and painted front bumper. It realy blended in.

Are you guys serous about the front roll pans? How the hell is a steel roll pan any differant than a steel bumper? When i wrecked my TA there was NOTHING left of that polyurithain frontend except some styrafoam scattered about and your telling me that i cant have use a STEEL roll pan?

Its easy to blend in a painted bumper when your truck is black because its all just a black blur anyway but for ligher color paints your pretty much screwed.

Man that sucks, i had planned to do a custom front roll pan with a billet insert but i dont want any more trouble with the police that i can avoid. Of course im still going to put a full phantom grill on my truck so i guess it doesnt really matter what i have for a bumper since i'll be in violation anyway.

The sticker isnt a problem but annoying cops with nothing better to do will be.

hmm, anyone with a roll pan ever had any troubles with being stopped for having it?

The poly fronts are backed by a steel bumper and "shock absorbers" so it colapses when hit.On our trucks there isn't much of a difference since about the only safty factor is the 2 piece steering shaft. But the feds law is the law!

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Of particular note is Section 5...

Quote:
5) When did the bumper standard first come into effect and how has it changed over the years?

On April 9, 1971, the agency issued its first passenger car bumper standard -- Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 215, "Exterior Protection," which became effective on September 1, 1972. This standard called for passenger cars, beginning with model year (MY) 1973, to withstand 5 mph front and 2 1⁄2 mph rear impacts against a perpendicular barrier without damage to certain safety-related components such as headlamps and fuel systems.

In October 1972, Congress enacted the Motor Vehicle Information and Cost Saving Act (MVICS Act) which mandated that the agency issue a bumper standard that yields the maximum feasible reduction of costs to the public, taking into account the cost and benefits of implementation, the standard's effect on insurance costs and legal fees, savings in consumer time and inconvenience, and health and safety considerations.

The new requirements under the MVICS Act were then consolidated with existing requirements in FMVSS 215 and promulgated in March 1976 as a new bumper standard, which was added to NHTSA's regulations at 49 CFR Part 581. The new standard which applied to passenger cars beginning with MY 1979, was referred to as the Phase I Standard. At the same time, a "no damage" requirement (Phase II) was placed on bumper systems for model year 1980 and subsequent years. (See question 6 for more information on Phase I and II requirements.)

The most recent revisions to the bumper standard took place in May 14, 1982, effective for MY 1983 and subsequent model year passenger cars. This amendment reduced test impact speeds from 5 mph to 2.5 mph for longitudinal front and rear barrier and pendulum impacts and from 3 mph to 1.5 mph for corner pendulum impacts. In addition, Phase I damage resistance criteria were substituted for Phase II criteria and a bumper height requirements of 16 to 20 inches was established for passenger cars.
Im no legal expert, but from what I read of this, only 1973 and later vehicles are subject to bumper standards. Does this mean you can remove your front bumper on a 1972 and earlier vehicle and replace it with a pan? I don't know, but I see lots of licensed early model vehicles on the street with no bumpers or rolled pans. Anyway, it's good information to know in case John Law pulls you over for no front bumper. You can at least quote him a little federal law.

I personally love the look of a rolled pan (especially on 67s and 68s). That's why the front frame horns of my 68 are trimmed off. I also have a piece of 2" tubing welded between the frame horns to strengthen that area. It's as strong or stronger than the flimsy "bumpers" on many late model cars.

Regardless of what "the man" says im going to keep on keepin on and do my thing the way i want it done. If i catch flack from the po po i'll try to play the "old truck" card and out smart him. If that doesnt work then i'll take the ticket and call the pig an a$$hole.

Most cops have better things to do than check bumper standards and the cops that dont arent worth the badge their wearing or at least thats my opinion.

My blazer has a roll pan in the front but behind it is a bumper. The frame horns and bumper brackets were shorten and a small steel I beam was welded in place. So if I am stopped I just raise the hood and show that I have a bumper.
