Question Fan shroud ?'s

After the 100 mile cruise this weekend, I have determined that I have to do something more about cooling the beast. Everything is new, 4 core radiator, fan and clutch, water pump, hoses and 160 degree thermostat. The only thing is I don't have a fan shroud. I need to do one of two things. Make a shroud or hopefully use an original style.

The truck is a 67 2wd where I have dropped in a 396 using later model engine mounts ('74 to be exact). To me it appears that the engine sits slightly higher than it would have with stock style monnts, but I'm not for sure. Does anybody know if a stock style BB shroud would fit? I'm affraid if the fan would get into the top of the shroud or not. Anybody have any experiences with a similar situation?

Thanks

I am in about the same boat. I don't have a shroud either and I think that must be the determining factor on the cooling problem.

If you stuck your Big Blocks on Small Block Motor Mount towers motor will set funny, and fan could hit shroud. You need a shrowd.I dont think id use a big block shrowd,i had them used and they go for $75,i think id modify something else,or make something.id probably put in a higher thermostat to,and make sure your lower radiator hose(if it dont have a spring in it)they will collapse and slow water flow.wat fan you have on there?6 or 7 blade i hope, and not a old 4 blade.clutch fans are good.think id correct my motor angle problem.might be as simple as lifting motor and swapping metal towers.

Re read your post,id change out the later mounts for starts.then you can run a stock fan shrowd.Fan shrowds make all the difference in the world.

Thumbs up

I really don't want to change engine mounts. I like the extra insurance the later model "clam shell" mounts give me. I'm not to hip on the style/design of the older mounts. I may have to see about making my own shroud out of aluminum. ? We'll see what happens.

Thanks.

67_SS396,
I'm in a similar situation, I swapped in a '98 engine with the accesories, including the fans setup and now need a not so stock shroud (I firmly believe in running one). I've been toying with the idea of having one built. I've even played with mock shrouds made from paper just to get an idea of what kind of cuts you have to make to get the round center. One thing I've heard is to not make it like a box. Without the slope into the middle you have dead air in the corners...or so I've heard.

I'd be curious to find out how yours turns out. Have you ever stopped by the Sachse Rod Shop? Those guys seem to do great work. I've seen some of their rods and some of their handywork with battery boxes. Wonder if they could fab a shroud for a reasonable amoung of money.

I need to go pay those guys a visit, so I will inquire about a custom shroud while I'm there. I'll let you know how it turns out!

Not a thing wrong with them. But I'm going to see what it takes to build a shroud and if I can do it for 1/2 to 1/3 of what the cost to set up electrics then I'd rather go that route. And if it is a nice aluminum or SS then that will look trick compared to the electrics. We'll have to see.
